A friends-to-lovers novella that came from Out of the Shadows because Nate and Dylan needed a story….
Nate and Dylan have been pals for a long time. So what if their friends think they’ve got a little bromance going? Doesn’t mean there’s anything more to it than that, right? And even if there is, Nate and Dylan are totally oblivious….
Until the night they share a drunken kiss, and everything changes.
REVIEW:
So remember Ryan’s roommate, Zach from Connection Error? Well he has his own story to tell and it’s a really good one. I spent the day with these men and had a blast. I was sad to see the book end, but at the same time I’m left completely satisfied with their story.
Zach is sick of being hassled by his team mates at the base, so he jumps at the chance to live rent free in exchange for renovating an old house. It doesn’t matter that he’s never built anything before – he can learn, he has the Internet after all. And living alone would be pure heaven. But renovating is comes with more mishaps than he ever planned for, so it is with great reluctance he offers Pike a room in the rental.
Pike is moving to San Diego for a new job a s visiting professor at a local college. He is happy when Zach offers him a room in exchange for helping him with renovations. Sparks fly and tension is high. Having been burn before, Pike is reluctant to start something with someone still in denial and as deep in the closet as Zach. But at the same time he’s never been as drawn to anyone as much as to the young SEAL either.
This was a great read/listen. It had something that I just love in books – a genuine plot and characters. It was real. They were real, warts and all. The struggles they went through was something you could relate to in one form or another. We’ve all been there, the denial, the choices we’ve been faced with, the hardships we’ve dealt with – not to mention the jerks we do our best to try and forget. And in the end we’re stronger for it, and maybe we find ourselves along the way. And that’s what this book was all about. Finding and being true to oneself, taking a chance and walk proudly into that unknown.
Tyler Stevens was a good choice of narrator for this book. His voice really fits with younger characters and he’s able to capture both Zach and Pike really well. I enjoyed listening to his narration of this book a lot and he had me captured in this world all day.
Off Base is a strong start to the Out of Uniform series. It’s sweet and packed with a lot of emotions and struggles. I connected to these characters and the story and had a wonderful day with this book. If you haven’t read or listened to this book already, it is definitely a must.
