Love is Love! So Why is There so Much Contention?!

I was trying to figure out what to blog about for this month when something happened that I thought would be the perfect subject for this month.

You may have seen me mention in my ultra gushy first post about why I love writing MM so much, that I absolutely LOVE the inclusivity of the MM reader community. I went on and on about how open minded MM readers are and that they’re into such a wide variety of stories. I still believe this to be true, but there’s a problem that I think needs addressing. Hetero love.

I saw a recent post where a MM author was torn down by her readers for including an MF story in her otherwise MM series. I understand that many MM readers strictly prefer to read LGBT stories, and that’s totally fine. I completely understand wanting to keep it on the rainbow side with your reading habits. Heck, I’m one of those people myself at this point. But if we preach loudly that love is love, then that means you shouldn’t be attacking an author for writing any love story, even if it’s not the content you prefer.

I’m going to say something a little out there now, this may come as a shock to some…if you don’t like the trope or pairing in a book, you can totally choose to not read it.

As readers of LGBT romance we need to do a better job at remembering that hetero love is love too, even if we don’t want to read book with any reference to female anatomy. Again, totally your call to skip those books, but don’t bash the authors or readers who enjoy them.

Remember, love is love.

Perfectly put. I completely agree. If you don’t want to read it, don’t buy it. And don’t bitch about it.
If you don’t want your rights stomped on, don’t stomp on others’.
