BLURB:
Coleman Wilder is a half-breed werewolf. Some days the tension between his human side and his werewolf instincts threaten to tear him apart. But the challenge of running a horse farm as a gay man in a conservative Tennessee town keeps him focused until he meets horse shifter, Jonah Marks.
Jonah’s family insists that shifting is sinful, but Jonah longs to let his stallion run free. Desperate to escape his family’s judgment, he asks Cole, his secret crush, for a job. Cole turns him down, scared his desire for Jonah will make him lose control. When Jonah’s brother threatens his life, Cole struggles to save him and give them both a second chance at the life they’ve always wanted.
REVIEW:
Silvia Violet is known for her erotic stories and normally I really enjoy her work. Sadly, this story was not my cup of tea.
Jonah comes to Cole begging him for a job when he’s just eighteen and Cole turns him away because of Jonah’s age and because he’s so attracted to Jonah he’s afraid he won’t be able to control himself if Jonah is living on his farm.
A year later he’s looking at a rescue horse that’s been beaten and nearly starved to death wondering why the horse feels familiar to him when Jonah reveals himself to be the abused horse.
Cole is horrified that Jonah’s been trapped in his horse form by his brother after Cole turned him away. But even though Jonah has been freed from his imprisonment, he’s still not safe because his brother is determined to do anything to hurt Jonah and also Cole.
Cole and Jonah are unlikely mates since Cole is a wolf and Jonah is a horse shifter. Yet Jonah never feels threatened by Cole’s wolf. He just wants to be seen as an equal partner in the relationship and not someone Cole needs to protect. Cole is known for how he takes in strays who might not otherwise have a home or a job.
There was a lot of religious bigotry in this particular story and in the past it probably wouldn’t have bothered me. But with the current political climate where there are news articles practically every day about religious extremists using their “beliefs” as a reason for hate, it just hit too close to home. And it’s entirely my fault for paying better attention to the blurb. While this particular audio wasn’t my cup of tea, I feel like there would be other people it would appeal to. Especially those who like a little BDSM sprinkled in with the supernatural.
This is the first time I’ve listened to a book narrated by Brad Langer. I didn’t care for his narration for this book; I felt like the southern accent was overexaggerated and not a good representation of his work. I feel like I would have enjoyed the book more if I’d read the print version instead.
