REVIEW:
It was the title of this book that first caught my attention. Mister Goshevens just sounded so fanciful, like a character who would be having tea with the Mad Hatter. Then I read that blurb and I was absolutely sold. A mysterious billionaire who sends his cryptic rhymes to a group of attractive young men, offering them a chance to join his game, the grand prize being the heart of Mister Goshevens himself. I loved this idea, it was so unique, yet at the same time it was so Who Wants to Marry a Billionaire!
Remi is our main character, a good looking young man from London who has arrived in New York along with two old college friends, ready to experience all the city has to offer. However, waking up after his first night in his luxurious hotel, he finds a note slipped under his door inviting him to play Mister Goshevens’ game for the chance to find love and live a life of luxury. The three friends are thankfully concerned! I think I would have ranted had there not been some concern that this unknown note writer could be a psychopath. But the hotel staff soon assures them that Mister Goshevens is indeed a legitimate billionaire, although no one ever seems to see him.
The entire story is told from Remi’s point of view, our title character not revealing himself until the end of the story. But Remi is never alone, as he and his friends are chauffeured all over New York in Mister Goshevens’ well stocked limo. I enjoyed the amount of events and places that the men explored, the author making the pages fly past quickly by making their fast paced exploring part of the plot. I was actually okay with not having our second main character present; in fact as the days of their holiday counted down, I was sad that the surprises were going to end. So for the most part, I really enjoyed this book.
Unfortunately, the reveal of Mister Goshevens was a bit of a let down. I simply didn’t feel any connection or attraction between him and Remi. It felt a lot like a business meeting or a negotiation even though there was talk of emotion. The “extra twist” which is also revealed at the end was confusing. It seemed completely unnecessary and just created questions, for me at least, that weren’t addressed.
However, just because I didn’t feel the chemistry doesn’t mean that no one else will. Like I said, this premise was interesting and I was entertained by the three friends’ shenanigans. If you like a book with a mysterious billionaire, maybe give this one a shot.
