BLURB:
Being a police detective is hard. Add the complication of being a werewolf subject to human prejudice, and you might say Ray Branigan has his work cut out for him. He’s hot on the trail of a killer when he realizes he needs help.
Enter Cal Parker, the beautiful half fairy Ray’s secretly been in love with for years – secretly because while werewolves mate for life, fairies…don’t. Ray needs Cal’s expertise, but it isn’t easy to concentrate with his mate walking around half naked, trying to publicly seduce him. By the time Ray identifies the killer – and sorts out a few prejudices of his own – it may be too late for Cal.
REVIEW:
When people are recommending paranormal stories, this series is named a lot so I’ve had it on my wishlist/TBR for a long time and I’m not exactly sure why I waited so long to begin it.
This first installment of the series is a combination murder mystery and romance. It opens with Ray and his police force partner investigating a break-in and assault of a fairy who works in a candy store. While Ray and his partner are working the case, other people associated in the crime are murdered in ways that make it look as if Ray could be responsible.
Ray’s a werewolf and his police partner is a siren. They’re two of a small number of beings employed by the police department. For the most part, Ray is accepted by his fellow police officers, yet they still tend to believe the old myths and inaccuracies about beings.
Ray is plagued by Cal, who’s a half fairy. Cal isn’t a police officer but he does do consulting work for the department. He also makes it a point to bring Ray treats and spread his scent all over Ray’s desk area.
I really enjoy the writing style of this author. I found the Being mythology refreshing and fun. While the werewolf mythology wasn’t necessarily unique, the fairy storyline was. In this universe fairies love to eat sweet treats and their scents reflect their love of sugary substances.
This is the second book in the Being(s) in Love series that I’ve listened to although it’s actually the first in the series. The only connection I’ve noticed between book one and book two is the supernatural MCs. So far, I’d definitely say they could be read as standalones in whichever order the reader desires. I also have the feeling that this could be the weakest book in the series.
This was the first time I’ve listened to Ron Herczig’s narration. I thought he did a good job with the narration but I did think his voice sounded somewhat too mature for the age of the characters.
I recommend this story for anyone who enjoys mysteries with paranormal characters.
