LENGTH: 245 Pages
RELEASE DATE: April 24, 2018
BLURB:
A hospital orderly explores his bisexuality with an adorably geeky lab tech, but can their sparks lead to love outside the closet?
When Ian Connolly installs a hookup app to explore his long-suppressed attraction to men, he doesn’t expect to connect with anyone he knows, especially not lab tech Callum Price. But from their first scorching encounter, he’s hooked.
Callum hasn’t had the best luck with love, and he’s suffocating under a pile of responsibilities. But when he sees an opportunity to blow off steam with Ian, he takes it. The man is smoking hot, big all over, and sweet as pie.
Their chemistry is off the charts, but a relationship is more challenging. Callum remains stubbornly self-reliant, while Ian tries too hard to be his rock. But if Ian can be honest with his family about loving a man, maybe Callum can admit his own truth: He wants a man he can count on, a man just like Ian.
REVIEW:
Ian and Callum have complicated lives. Now that Ian is divorced, he is free to explore the bi side of his sexuality. Callum has a disabled mom, and his ex is living under his roof. Via an app, Callum hooks up with Ian, and their chemistry is undeniable, but how long is Callum prepared to wait for Ian to come out of the closet?
As with the other books in this series, it is efficiently written, but contains sudden jumps in the timeline, which are a touch disconcerting – albeit minimally. It is something to be aware of. Having said that, I enjoyed the read. There is a cast of characters who vary in nature, from the caring to the asshole.
In the Callum household, there is plenty of negativity. Nonetheless, Callum is confident with who he is. He likes his independence and feels, no one needs to protect him. Ian is a natural carer. This side of his personality occasionally brings him into conflict with Callum who has issues with being taken care of as he doesn’t want to be seen as a helpless twink. Then, despite being older, Ian is the least experienced of the two, which brings its own series of fun.
I have to admit, Ian is my favourite. His family too are a riot. I would love to be at one of their family gatherings. The banter contains everything from the pc to the not so pc comments.
The journey Ian and Callum take is fraught with fear of coming out, lots of heat, unsure footings regarding the transition from fuck buddies to boyfriends, and crossed wires. There are also times of jealousy and insecurity, where strong feelings are not always logical. While I sympathised with the issues Ian and Callum faced, it didn’t pull at my heartstrings as much. I like my OTT drama.
I found An Orderly Affair to be a sweet ride, and a nice volume to be added to the series. It is more emotional than dramatic, although there was the odd tense moment and a lot more action between the sheets.
So, if your taste in books features characters who are a little emotionally lost, who need to find their way with a touch of the aww factor – this is probably right up your street.
