Arthur MacArthur needs a job, and not just for the money. Before he dropped out of school to support his younger sister, he loved being a research assistant at the university. But working for a dragon, one of the rarest and least understood magical beings, has unforeseen complications. While Arthur may be the only applicant who isn’t afraid of Philbert Jones in his dragon form, the instant attraction he feels for his new employer is beyond disconcerting.
Bertie is a brilliant historian, but he can’t find his own notes without help – his house is a hoard of books and antiques, hence the need for an assistant. Setting the mess right is a dream come true for Arthur, who once aspired to be an archivist. But making sense of Bertie’s interest in him is another matter. After all, dragons collect treasure, and Arthur is anything but extraordinary.
REVIEW:
I’ve seen a lot of people recommend this series but hadn’t yet started it because my TBR is massive. After listening to the audio, I find myself wondering why I hadn’t moved it up to read sooner!
Arthur is a very hardworking man who holds several jobs to help pay expenses for him and his sister. So when he’s recommended for a position with Dr. Philbert Jones as a research assistant, he’s cautiously hopeful because if he’s hired by Dr. Jones he could quit most of his part-time jobs.
Dr. Jones is intrigued by Arthur right away since he doesn’t run away when confronted by Bertie in his dragon form. Also, Arthur was highly recommended by one of his previous professors.
Everyone knows dragons hoard their treasure and it’s rumored that their scales hold great power, even the ones that fall off the dragon’s body. So they fetch a lot of money on the black market. Arthur isn’t so much tempted by Bertie’s hoard as he is the thought of finding a fallen scale to sell. As he begins working with Bertie, he’s horrified at the careless way Bertie treats his book collection (As any real bibliophile would be!) and makes sure to call Bertie out for his negligence. He’s also extremely attracted to Bertie which isn’t helped by the dragon’s constant flirting and innuendos.
I really enjoyed this story. I thought it was entertaining & fun. I’m a sucker for dragons as well as a slow burn romance and this story definitely delivered. There’s really only one sex scene and it’s almost at the end of the book. I had to shake my head at Arthur a lot though because he’s pretty clueless about picking up Bertie’s cues through the entire story.
Guy Veryzer is a new-to-me narrator and I thought he did a great job although I felt like his voice was more suited to older characters because I thought he sounded like he was in his 60s instead of the 20s for Arthur.
