Bryan writes M/M Romance with an emphasis on moral dilemma. His multicultural characters and riveting plots embody real life, filled with challenges, personal growth, and, of course, what we all desire—love.
I see that you are happily married to your soul mate of over thirty years. How does your husband feel about your writing career and does he play a part in your dream as an author?
He loves it, and had it not been for his encouragement, I most likely would not be a published author today. Once upon a time, my writing was only for my pleasure. I never thought about having it published. The only eyes I imagined seeing any of my work, was my husband. When he started reading my first book, ‘Ancient House of Cards’, his response was “You have to publish this!” Of course, I always listen to my husband! Today, he is not only one of my biggest fans, but next to my editor, he plays a sizeable role in teasing out the growth in each character.
Wow! What’s the secret in lasting thirty plus years?
(Laughing…) There is no secret. He is my best friend; he’s the person who I want to spend my free time with (well most of the time). We even share the same name.
How sweet. Do you hold hands in public?
I wish. No, my husband is that quiet guy over in the corner at any party. The last thing he wants is to garner any attention. However, I have to say, he is very attentive and loving in our private times together.
Do you think of yourself as a romantic?
Not really, but I get a tremendous amount of pleasure in spoiling my husband. He has been there for me through some of the toughest times in my life. He knows me better than I know myself. How can you not love a person who knows your demons and still loves you back anyways?
So are you admitting you have demons? Any that you care to share?
Oh, hell no! You will never get that out of me! However, if you read my books, they’re in there, embedded into my characters.
Do you work with an outline or just write?
I start with an idea, that I write out on paper. Then I plot out the beginning, the middle and the end. The middle of any book that I write is where all hell is breaking loose, and you, the reader can’t stop reading because you have to know what happens. Everything in between these three points is created as it comes to me, delivered by the character themselves. Sometimes, that may even be in the middle of the night, as I’m trying to sleep.
One last question. What’s your all-time favorite book?
That’s an easy one, ‘The Front Runner’ by Patricia Nell Warren, published back in 1974. I first read it when I was twelve. I have probably read it about ten times since. I had the biggest crush on the Billy Sive character in that book.
Can love conquer our deepest secrets and fears?
Are the challenges worth the struggle?
Eight years ago, at the age of seventeen, Diego Castillo came to the United States illegally from Mexico. Working long hours in the family landscaping business, he now shares a tiny apartment with his two machismo brothers in Southern California. Diego has worked hard to keep his desires for other men a secret from his brothers. He’s worked just as hard to keep his undocumented status a secret from the world he now lives in.
Thirty-two-year-old Winston Makena is beautiful, intelligent, and intimidating. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but no amount of money can relieve the enormous grief he is suffering from his husband’s sudden death. He is one of Diego’s best accounts and lives a life in stark contrast to his gardener’s. Winston’s wealthy upbringing has influenced his ideas, leading him to certain biases.
Winston believes he could never love again. Diego believes that his family’s lives depend on him keeping his secrets. What neither of them know is that the heart knows no such boundaries. Will social divisions, ideology, and secrets destroy both their chances for happiness?
