Being a fugitive in the old west shouldn’t be this much fun.
The year is 1860. Robby Riverton is a rising star on the New York stage. But he witnesses a murder by a famous crime boss and is forced to go on the run–all the way to Santa Fe. When he still hasn’t ditched his pursuers, he disguises himself as a mail order bride he meets on the wagon train. Caught between gangsters that want to kill him, and the crazy, uncouth family of his “intended”, Robby’s only ally is a lazy sheriff who sees exactly who Robby is — and can’t resist him.
Trace Crabtree took the job as sheriff of Flat Bottom because there was never a thing going on. And then Robby Riverton showed up. Disguised as a woman. And betrothed to Trace’s brother. If that wasn’t complication enough, Trace had to find the man as appealing as blueberry pie. He urges Robby to stay undercover until the danger has passed. But a few weeks of having Robby-Rowena at the ranch, and the Crabtree family will never be the same again.
Damn, what a kerfuffle. If only Trace can get rid of the fugitive while hanging on to his own stupid heart
REVIEW:
I love the mistaken identity/undercover trope and I just knew I had to read this book. It was calling my name as soon as I saw that title.
It has been a long time since that i picked up a historical romance, and after reading this one I can’t for the life of me remember why. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was engrossed from the first to last page and just couldn’t stop reading. Before I knew it I’d gobbled it all up in one go and it was well past midnight. And I don’t regret a thing.
Robby Riverton was finally gaining momentum in his acting career when he one fateful night witnesses the murder of a banker. To escape the murderers and to stay alive he flees out west in. On the wagon trail he meets and befriends Rowena, a mail order bride on her way to meet her future husband in Flat Bottom, only she leaves with another man, leaving him with a letter for her intended.
Trace, the local sheriff doesn’t expect much from life. All he wants is some peace and quiet. He’s distanced himself from his family and can’t really stand them for longer than a couple of hours at a time. When he saves a young woman from being accosted by two thugs on the street of Santa Fe he never dreamed of the trouble ”she” would bring.
Robby and Trace were great together. The connection they developed could be considered fast, but then again it did fit with the story and it never felt forced or contrived. There was plenty of chemistry and steam, but that was not by far everything between them.
There was only one (minor) thing missing for me, and that was a bit more depth and background. It’s not by any means shallow or flat story, but I do wish we’d gotten to know more about the pasts. This book deals with the here and now and it was all very great. But is it wrong to want to know more about the people I’ve come to care for?
Robby Riverton was definitely well worth reading, even for those of you that aren’t hard core fans of historical romances. It’s a sweet, low-angst and sassy romance and I would love to meet Robby again, I wouldn’t be surprised if (when) more trouble finds him.
