Welcome Kim 🙂

Lovebytes guestpost

Hi! I’m Kim Fielding, and I’m very excited to announce the arrival of my new Dreamspun Desires book, A Full Plate! If you’re in the mood for a sweet little opposites-attract romance, this may fit your tastes exactly.

Today I’d like to talk about kitchen appliances. Yes, really. You see, the protagonist in A Full Plate is a wealthy lawyer named Tully who buys expensive appliances for his luxury condo—and then never uses them because he doesn’t know how to cook. But then, as a favor to a friend, he lets a small-town cook named Sage move in with him. You can bet that Sage knows how to use those pricy gadgets, and the food he makes helps warm Tully’s heart.

So. Kitchen appliances. I guess I feel strongly about them too. My husband refers to a section of our pantry as the appliance graveyard, but there are a few that I use often and love unreservedly.

Number one? My espresso machine. It’s a big, shiny Italian job that cost considerably more than my first (used) car. But all I have to do is pour in the beans, fill the reservoir with water, and push a button. The resulting brew is as good as any I’ve had in European cafés. The machine also does fancier stuff like frothing milk, but I use it mostly for just espresso.

Number two? My electric kettle. (Do we notice a caffeinated beverages theme?) For years it never occurred to me to get one. They’re not common in the US, and I used to heat my tea water in the microwave or in a kettle on the stove. Then I lived for a short time in Croatia, where my apartment came with an electric kettle, and I fell in love. I ordered one as soon as I returned home; I use it daily. My older daughter is infatuated too and brought one to her college dorm.

And number three? My KitchenAid stand mixer. I like my bread machine a lot too, but the KitchenAid is more versatile. It also has emotional value because it once belonged to my grandmother, who passed away some time ago. She was baking right up until her final days, and I like to think that some of her spirit is in it. In fact, I still keep it covered with the cloth that she decorated with paint pens.

How about you? Is there a kitchen appliance you can’t live without? Do you drool over Sur La Table catalogs as you lust after pasta makers? Or are you a simple pot and pan type?

Here’s a simple recipe from my other grandmother.

Rose’s Rice Pudding

1 cup raw rice

1 Tbsp vegetable shortening

3 eggs, beaten

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp almond extract

7/8 cup orange juice

½ cup sugar

1 cup raisins

Cinnamon

Cook rice. To the warm rice, add shortening, eggs, vanilla, almond extract, orange juice, sugar, and raisins. Mix. Put in greased 9×13 pan. Sprinkle cinnamon on top. Bake at 325F for about 40 minutes. Eat warm or cold.

A Full Plate by Kim Fielding

Opposites come together for a spicy surprise.

Bradford “Tully” Tolliver has everything—money, a great car, a beautiful condo, and a promising career as one of Portland’s hottest young lawyers. Sure, he puts in long hours and has no social life to speak of, but who needs romance when corporations pay top dollar for his expertise? He hesitates when a colleague asks if her cousin can live with him, but the arrangement will last less than a year, and then the cousin—Sage Filling—will return to his tiny hometown.

But Sage is handsome and intriguing, and his cooking makes Tully swoon. Sage has obligations back home, though, and Tully has offers he might not refuse from a persistent—and very wealthy—ex. Since Tully and Sage each have a full plate, can they make room for a side of love?

author bio

Kim Fielding is the bestselling author of numerous m/m romance novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in 15th century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, housekeepers, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.

After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there with her husband, her two daughters, and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.
