“We are two halves of the same rotten apple.”
Deep in the Amazonian jungle, there is a mansion with a rose garden and a hen house where juicy tomatoes are the perfect shade of red, and marble countertops glisten. Inside, where even the shadows don’t reach, something is rotting, and the perfect facade can only hold the stench for so long.
Domenico promised his husband that he would keep him safe, keep him away from the bloodshed and the brutal world of cartel violence. But when a guest arrives to help retrieve a stolen transport of guns, something sinister sneaks into his home, something more dangerous than his enemies. Or has it been there all along, and he just hasn’t noticed?
Seth’s life is what others dream of. Endless leisure time filled with cocktails, a kitchen stocked with anything he wishes for, and a private pool in the sunshine. What’s missing is the man he shares it with, the man he fell in love with. If being cut off from the mafia business was what he wanted, then why is it so painfully lonely in paradise?
Desperate to be the supportive husband Domenico needs, Seth buries his rage, his violent urges, and the anger that simmers inside of him. But he can only hide in plain sight for so long, and when a guest invites him to play with fire, one misstep, one wrong move, could burn their safe haven to the ground.
REVIEW:
Anyone that follows my reviews will probably know that I love the writing these two ladies do. Their stories are always bound to please, while at the same time providing some instances of shock and surprise.
One word of warning. Pay attention to the note at the beginning of the blurb. This is in no way a standalone book. It is number seven and they all have to be read in order. If you haven’t read them yet and you’ve been living in a void and aren’t familiar with them, you should pick up book one and get started on the journey! My review will assume you know who Seth and Dom are, as well as that you know the backstory from the other books.
In book seven of the series we’re back with our heroes. They have been living in the Amazon jungle in a small town that Dom took over from the former warlord, Toro. Toro was more of a title, and Dom has assumed it. He has also assumed the position of middle man between two vicious criminals trafficking in weapons and other illegal items. Now a shipment of weapons worth $5,000,000 has disappeared and the crew on the boat transporting them have all been slaughtered and thrown overboard. The boat is full of blood, but not a single weapon.
One of the criminals has sent one of his lieutenants to help solve the theft. But everything isn’t as it seems. Dom and Seth are in a rocky spot in their relationship and Mark has stepped up to help provide backup to Dom in his business. Seth has retired to the house and is kind of like a prisoner in his own home or a bird in a gilded cage as the title implies. He’s not exactly a prisoner, more of an overly protected royal.
I found myself kind of irritated with both of them in this one, which, if I’m honest, detracted a little from the story. Neither was communicating what they were thinking or feeling, and the entire book was full of miscommunication. I still loved the read, and read it straight through this morning, but they irritated me. There were also those instances of surprise. No spoilers, but the thing with Mark caught me totally by surprise. I can’t wait to see what happens with Mark in book eight, for which there is a ‘blurb’ tucked into the end of this current book.
I’d recommend this book and the entire series. I love these ladies.
