Gabriel Maverick grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and held absolutely no hope of ever climbing out of the box his parents and society shoved him into. When small town gossip labeled him a failure, he believed it. All that changed, though, when he met Kelsey Morganston.
Kelsey Morganston not only grew up on the right side of the tracks, his family owned the tracks. To anybody on the outside looking in, Kelsey had it all. Small town society gently placed him into his box and failure wasn’t an option. All that changed though, when he met Gabriel Maverick.
Young love was immediate and forever. Suddenly, Gabriel felt like he could conquer the universe and Kelsey found an inner strength he hadn’t realized existed. In their small corner of the world with their desires hidden from everyone except each other, they believed their love was indestructible. They were mistaken. In one night, lies and misunderstandings destroy their love and forces Gabriel to run away from the town and Kelsey.
Ten years later, Gabriel is back and determined to exact revenge on the boy he used to love. Will hate blind him to what his heart tries telling him…or will love have a second chance?
REVIEW:
So many things to say about Confessions of Pain, it is a roller coaster ride of a story. Gabriel Maverick loved Kelsey Morganston more than anything and couldn’t believe that he found himself running away from his home, the boy he loved and the small measure of safety he use to enjoy. After some very tough years he has found friends and fortune and he has gone back to his home town for revenge against the boy and his family for the pain they caused him. The Morganston fabric factory is now Gabriel’s.
This story held my interest for the same reason that it annoyed me. Gabriel’s character is angry and because of that anger he doesn’t think rationally. In front of him is a defeated scared man with leather bracelets on his arms and instead of being able to see that, all he sees is what he heard his father accuse him of. And for me, this got old. That being said, the emotion is well written, and you feel the pain and anger that the characters.
There are some things in this book that should have a warning. Some animal abuse that while not overly graphic, still made me twitch. Suicide attempts, abuse and mental illness are all discussed. I don’t think anything is discussed so deeply that it would trigger most people, but it is important that you know what you are going into.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story. I think the angst and hate was too drawn out. But the emotions and the feelings were great. The friendships and relationships were solid and well written. Once Gabriel got over himself, the end was great. I really hope there is a book 2 because this story certainly opens up to some wonderful second book opportunities. Though I left this book happy with the end.
