A widowed alpha finds something unexpected with a rescued, pregnant omega…
Two years after his longtime mate passed away, Senior Constable Isa Higgs lives for his work solving crimes and protecting the citizens of Sansbury Province—and he won’t admit to anyone that he’s lonely. His three beta sons barely speak to him, he has no real friends to speak of, and his home feels too empty most nights. When he helps free five omega prisoners from a life of torture and abuse, Isa is unexpectedly drawn to one in particular—an omega six months pregnant with another alpha’s child.
Liam Haley lost everything in one single tragedy—his family, his freedom, and his ability to make choices. And then he’s whisked out of hell by an alpha constable twice his age who should terrify Liam, but instead, the man makes him feel safe. Protected. Wanted. But Liam is carrying a child he isn’t sure he wants to keep, and the last thing he needs is to get attached to a widowed alpha who can’t possibly want him back…right?
With Liam pregnant and Isa previously mated, neither man is sure exactly what they’re feeling—only the more time they spend together, the closer they become. And Liam is still sorting through the trauma of his kidnapping, so friendship is their only recourse—until someone from Liam’s past shows up to claim what he believes is his. Now Isa has to choose between letting Liam go, or fighting like hell for the damaged, young omega he’s unexpectedly fallen in love with.
NOTE: This is a non-shifter Omegaverse story with alpha/omega/beta dynamics, heats, knotting, and mpreg. In this world, omegas are second-class citizens with few civil rights and almost no protections under the law. Trigger warnings for physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
REVIEW:
When I first started reading this series, I will be honest, I didn’t notice Isa Higgs much. I knew he was a Senior Constable and was doing all he can to make his constables good crew members and erase crime, but he just didn’t have a huge role. But the series went on, he got bigger roles and I really noticed him and really liked him. He was a compassionate man and did everything he could for justice. And when his story was told, somewhat, it made me weep for him. Especially when his story was really told here. And I’m so glad he got another chance. He deserved it and I love this story. I was also happy to see some justice served in this book. Finally.
Isa has resigned the fact that he will be alone for the rest of his life. He lost his omegin 2 years ago and after dealing with such grief and anger, he knows he needs to make things better with his kids. What he doesn’t expect is while raiding another house for the fighting ring, is that he has found a young man who’s scent he can not erase from his mind and heart. He can’t keep himself from visiting this young man in the hospital either. He tries to visit all the victims, but something about Liam is calling to him. And he realizes this is his mate. But he doesn’t understand how he could be granted another chance. And with one so young and already pregnant. Liam is just as confused. He doesn’t trust any alphas anymore after what he’s been through. On top of that, he’s confused with his pregnancy hormones. But Isa is calling to him too. Isa takes over guardianship so he can be with Liam and take care of him until he’s ready, if ever, for something more. Through some major trials and tribulations, they mate but things are determined to break them apart. To the point of both of them almost dying. But Isa knows he’s been given a second chance and Liam has been given someone he can actually trust and love, and neither are going to stop fighting for their family and all they love.
Gah!! I wanted to crawl in this book and stab some people. Iverson was first on the list. His reach is still reaching. And people are still being hurt and abused. But the constables are doing everything they can to break it up. And they think they’ve finally gotten it. With this last ring, Liam is finally saved. He doesn’t understand what’s going on. He’s not understood all along. All he knows is the man that’s rescued him has left his mark. Isa is the only alpha he’s trusted in a while. He’s lost his family. He’s been abused. He’s pregnant and held captive. And all he wanted was his family and love. He didn’t know if he’d ever get it. He didn’t even know if he’d be able to keep his baby. If he would even want him. He just wants his freedom. But he knows that even comes with a price. Being a pregnant omega, heck an omega period, where would he go? So heartbreaking. And then Isa comes along and saves the day. Woohoo! And with all that Isa has been through, yay!! He wanted love again but figured he’d never get it. His bondmate died. He never figured he’d get another. He’s messed up his relationship with his kids through grief and anger. He’s sick of all the cruelty and abuse and all the bad stuff he sees everyday. And Liam comes along like a breath of fresh air. In spite of all he’s going through and has been through. I’m so happy.
Through all the hell that all these boys have had to go through, it’s been so great to see them get happy endings. Even at the cost of others. Or others sacrifices. Unfortunately, life has a way of, again, being a dick. With all the trouble we have to endure, it’s a reminder to hold on to hope and those you love. Every ounce of that love is worth the fight. Just don’t give up.
