An infamous pirate, Merric is known as much for stealing his victims’ hearts as their jewels. Daniel’s world is about to be turned upside down when he recognises Captain Merric as none other than Edward Merriston, someone he thought he’d never see again. Edward can’t believe Daniel Horton is aboard his ship. While Edward is willing to do anything he can to get a second chance at their happy ending, Daniel isn’t interested in digging up the past. But Daniel is one priceless treasure Captain Merric isn’t about to let go of without a fight.
Captain Merric first appeared as short story in a pirate-themed anthology. Now completely rewritten and extended he is ready to set sail again.
REVIEW:
I will state right now that I flat out loved this book! I don’t think I ever read the original short story this was expanded from but I’m so very glad that I picked this one up. One of the very first thoughts I had about Edward was ‘cheeky pirate’ and while that impression held true over the course of the story, he was also much more than that and it showed in his willingness to do what he had to in order to get and keep Daniel.
After 15 years of thinking Edward had died, it comes as quite a shock when Daniel finds him not only alive but the captain of a pirate ship. Edward was Daniel’s first and only love and the hurt and loss he’s lived with over the long years have left him a cold, unyielding man that refuses to open his heart to anyone else. While Edward never expected to actually see Daniel face to face again, he’s more surprised to find that his past lover had no idea he was alive and quickly resolves to bring the other man back to his bed. Daniel is less than enthusiastic, however, and what followed was in turns amusing to read and necessarily cathartic to both main characters as they have to work through what happened in the past in order to even contemplate a future. There are obviously a multitude of issues keeping both men apart and away from their second chance at a happy ending, first and foremost being that Daniel is an officer in the Royal Navy while Edward is now a pirate, but there are more pressing matters having to do with what happened to make Daniel believe that Edward had died. Figuring out the truth is painful but its the years that came after and Edward’s well deserved reputation that prove the harder obstacle to overcome. I flat out adored both men; I felt they were a damned good match for one another and the author did a really good job portraying each of them in their chosen ‘profession’.
This book was so good; I was so drawn into the story that I devoured in just a couple of hours and kept coming back to it even when I was supposed to be doing something else. I absolutely regret nothing. This book was just full to bursting with good stuff including Edward being exceptionally piratey (yes, piratey is totally a word) as well as getting to see both he and Daniel work to be together. I really enjoyed seeing them air out the past and make plans on how they can be together. The sexy times were great too, not gonna lie. 😀 After finishing the book I came to two conclusions: first, I need more pirates in my life and second, I need to read more of this author’s books. If you enjoy historical book but are tired of the same London backdrop or if you enjoy your men a little less law abiding, I’d really recommend giving this one a look!
