They were only kids when they met for the first time. Leo Mancini was the son of a judge. Roman Cipriani the son of a criminal. So different, yet as they shared stolen kisses and secret moments, they fell in love. One day they would run away together, have the future they deserved, because no one loved Leo like Roman did, or Roman like Leo did. But before they could make their dreams come true, their future was viciously stolen and their lives changed forever.
Roman has spent the last twelve years repressing the trauma in his past, trying to pretend it didn’t exist, until even he believed his own lies.
Leo won’t let himself forget what happened because he doesn’t ever want to be that person again. He won’t become the man his father wanted him to be or the guy who gets hurt when he lets someone in.
But in that split second when their eyes meet again, everything changes. Despite Leo’s anger and Roman’s denial, the connection they shared as teens is still there, too powerful to deny. Now, when their moments don’t have to be stolen, they cling to what they’ve always craved–each other.
Roman and Leo aren’t kids anymore, though–they can’t lock themselves away from the world and pretend nothing exists but each other. A trauma like Roman suffered doesn’t just go away, but now that Roman accepts his truth, can the two of them escape their demons before they destroy Roman and Leo a second time?
Possible triggers: violence and homophobia
REVIEW:
This is not an easy ride. Being a fan of Miss Hart and having read all her books I can say I was honestly very curious about this one, especially when reading how it came to be published.
If I need to sum up this book in one word it would be intense. This story is intense, heavy laced but beautiful and honest.
We meet up with Roman and Leo after they have been separated for many years since they were teens. Despite the horrible way they were separated there is no denying there is still so much there between them both. 12 years apart has done nothing to dim their feelings for each other. It is obvious that the love they shared is still very much present.
When they look into each others eyes for the first time after so long, there is no denying that things will change. There is so much that hasn’t been said and should be spoken about.
It takes time and lots of patience, anger, grief and yes love but they have to find a way to become more than their past and see what is still there.
Miss Hart doesn’t stay clear of the drama in this newest release. This story deals with some heavy issues yet in a most respectful, open way that touched me deeply.
Not stopping at Leo and Roman together says it all. You sense that there is more, that there are things that aren’t spoken about enough. There is so much underlying grief and a tone of fear and insecurity that you just feel it in the pages that you are reading.
If I should mention some small form of criticism, then I would mention the fact that some things feel liked they’ve been skipped over especially with Leo, where the focus is more on Roman. I had a couple of moments at the end of the book where I realized that I missed connecting some dots with Leo and his life. Although I have to say the mentioning of Leo and his mum is a very wonderful part and I would have liked to have seem more about that including his work. I also would have loved to have seen how the brother relationship would have evolved.
With the way Miss Hart tells Roman’s story including dealing with his issues and how she portrays Leo and their life and love in their younger years and as they grew up, this book is highly recommended by me.
Even if you aren’t a fan of Miss Hart, this book will surprise you in a different way. The author explored very significant and real issues combined with a flawless, extremely pleasant way of writing.
It was my absolute pleasure to be able to read this book. I am glad Miss Hart decided on publishing it after all.
