Deacon Reid was born bad to the bone with no intention of changing. A lifetime of law-bending and living on the edge suits him just fine, until his baby sister dies and he finds himself raising her little girl.
Staring down a family history of bad decisions and reaped consequences, Deacon cashes in everything he owns, purchases an auto shop in Half Moon Bay, and takes his niece, Zig, far away from the drug dens and murderous streets they grew up on. Zig deserves a better life than what he had, and Deacon is determined to give it to her.
Lang Harris is stunned when Zig, a little girl in combat boots and a purple tutu, blows into his bookstore, and then he’s left speechless when her uncle, Deacon Reid, walks in hot on her heels. Lang always played it safe, but Deacon tempts him to step over the line…just a little bit.
More than a little bit. And Lang is willing to be tempted.
Unfortunately, Zig isn’t the only bit of chaos dropped into Half Moon Bay. Violence and death strike, leaving Deacon scrambling to fight off a killer before he loses not only Zig but Lang too.
REVIEW:
Can you ever go wrong with a Rhys Ford book? Well picking up this book is certainly not it. I loved it. From that explosive beginning, the pink tutus and the awesomeness that is Zig. This book put a smile on my face and generally made my day.
Deacon Reid is a (mostly) reformed bad boy and all alpha male. Buying an auto shop in Half Moon Bay he hopes that he and his niece, Zig would be able to start over after a rough couple years. Only the next bookshop owner next door wasn’t included in those plans.
Lang is happy running his bookshop, hiding away and licking his wounds in this small town. He has no plans for anything to change. That is until eight year old Zig in a purple tutu and combat boots came stomping into his store with her oh, so yummy uncle in tow. Only problem is trouble is also not far behind, and trying to stay alive is suddenly something easier said than done.
The relationship between Deacon and Lang is borderline insta-love, but that is also one for the par with Rhys Ford. I will say one thing though, she makes it work. And I am as always in awe of her talent for creating such engaging stories and characters. Zig though is by far the greatest character I’ve come across in a while, I just loved everything about this sassy little girl.
Spencer Goss was a new narrator for me and I loved listening to him performing this book. Not only did he have a great voice. he did all the things I’m always looking for with great narrations – he put feelings into the words and took you into the book and story. He also had different voices for the different characters which make it so much easier to follow along with the story. I will happily listen to more of Goss’s narrations in the future.
This was a great start to a promising new series and I will be keeping my eye out for more books. Highly recommended!
