Karl Meeke—the talented guitarist of Manchester’s own pride and joy, Ocean of Tears—is depressed. It’s not a word he would usually use for himself, but lately, he’s feeling worse. A lot worse. Over the past few months, the music that has been a constant sound inside of him hasn’t just grown quieter; it’s fallen silent. The love of his life has abandoned him, and at the prime age of fifty-three, he feels like it’s all downhill from here. That is, until he meets the young and vibrant Noa.
Noa is attending the Northern School of Ballet in Manchester; his dream is to become a ballerino for the London Royal Ballet. Noa dances into Karl’s life from nowhere, and even when Karl shows no interest, Noa will not let him go. Instead, he finds a way to nestle into that lonely slot in Karl’s heart, where music once lived, and makes a home there.
Only when things start to change, for the better, does Karl realise what it all means, and by then, he’s so far into the deep end he has no choice but to start swimming.
REVIEW:
What a beautiful story. I just love stories that grab at the heartstrings like this. It doesn’t matter how old you are, or how young, what you do, or even what you look like. Love is love. It’s who you are. The beauty inside you.
Karl was dried up. He felt washed up. Never more in his life did he feel like a failure. He’s terrified to tell his band mates he can’t do this anymore. His love of music has just seemed to stop. And he doesn’t know what to do to get it back. He’s tried everything. One drunken bender night, though, things started to change. When a blue eyed beautiful young man decided to annoy him at his favorite pub. Karl tried to ignore Noa. With everything in him. Noa talked too much and persisted too much. But he couldn’t get this kid out of his mind. Noa is so into Karl. From the moment he laid eyes on this long haired beauty, he just knew there was something about him. But trying to get Karl to see him seems impossible. Just when they take a step forward, Karl takes one back. But Karl is writing again and he knows Noa is the reason why. Every song he writes is for Noa. Words he can’t say aloud. But Noa has to leave and Karl is too scared to say what he really feels. Plus he doesn’t want to weigh Noa down with his age. Time apart shows Karl how miserable he is. Can he finally let go and let Noa how he feels?
Noa is….oh my gah. He makes me want to be a dude just so I can have him. He’s so beautiful inside and out. Karl is in love with him just for the way he dance alone. Plus much more 😉 . But Noa has this way about him. He makes you want to be better. He makes you want to smile. He makes you dream and hope. And just when you think you may be too old for love, *cough* Karl *cough*, he sneaks in under your skin and makes you love. His soul paints the heavens with his beauty. And he’s everything Karl needs. Karl feels like he’s lived his life. He’s on the backside of it now. He’s never had a family. No major relationship, no kids. Just him. Figuring he’s too old now, there’s not much point in believing that will ever change. Plus being dried up as far as music goes, what does he have to offer anymore. But Noa blew in his life and swept it away in a tidal wave. He gave him so much. But Karl can’t get past the age. He’s terrified he’s going to hold Noa back. But when love sweeps in, nothing else should matter. And that’s what Karl had to learn. He had to see Noa for Noa. Not for his age. He had to finally let his heart rule over his head. And that made all the difference.
You know, one of the things I love most about this book is that it’s not about sex. Don’t misunderstand me. Sometimes there’s nothing better than a good, hot sex scene. But other times, it’s better to remember it should be about the intimacy, the relationship. The building of one. The learning each other and finding out what makes the other tick. The love, the falling into love. It’s beautiful.
