BLURB:
Zack: Ten years ago, I killed a man for the boy I love. Each week since then, he’s sent me letters, telling me the story of his life. He’s visited me every month in prison and with each passing year, I wonder when he’ll wake up and realize I’m not worth his time.
Seth: A decade ago, Zack took the fall to save my life. I’ve been waiting for him ever since. Zack’s the one for me, even if the stubborn man thinks I deserve better. I’ll do everything in my power to convince Zack that my life and my heart always belonged to him.
REVIEW:
One of my favorite romance plot devices is the reunion story—two characters who are destined to be together but must withstand long times apart before they tearfully meet again. It provides so much yummy tension, pining, and passion to an already-great story. This book appealed to me because Seth and Zack have loved each other since high school but were separated for ten years, and through all that time, they remained 100% devoted to one another. Now that’s a way to start a romance!
The issue I had with this book is that we get a lovely reunion, but nothing much before that or even after that. It’s a small snippet of a relationship. To get to the amazing reunion, there needs to be something about the relationship that ups the stakes and makes that reunion worth getting invested in. In this very short story, we get only a few pages of Zack and Seth’s dynamic before they’re separated—and despite the letters mentioned in the blurb, we get almost nothing about their communication during Zack’s prison sentence. Even after they get back together, so many of the post-prison variables and anxieties Zack will probably face are glossed over to make way for a less-interesting subplot about Seth’s mother.
Seth and Zack are absolutely scorching together—that’s undeniable. If you like your men a little on the dominant, possessive, and protective side, Zack will push all your buttons. He’s been without love for ten years, and Seth is more than willing to make up for it (several times in a row). And Seth’s hard work and long hours spent making a good home for Zack when he returns will make your heart ache. They’re a couple who have each other’s backs to the very end, even when things get really tough. And who can’t root for that?
Their instant chemistry makes me wish Voisen worked this into a longer story that made us more invested in these two men seeing each other again after 10 years apart. Apart from having some passionate love scenes, this book just fell a little short of expectations.
