Luke Sumner has spent his whole life being coddled, after nearly dying as an infant. At twenty-one, he is more than ready to break free from his restricted world. He hasn’t told anyone he’s gay, and he’s only just admitted his kinkier needs to himself, but he hopes to work up the courage to say something to the older man who has captured his attention.
Since moving back to Ames Bridge, Jack Lawrence has been consumed with running a successful bed-and-breakfast. He hasn’t considered making time for relationships until he starts flirting with Luke each week at the farmers’ market. By the end of the summer, Jack is wondering where the spark between them could go.
When Luke finally ventures into a club where he can fulfill his desires, he unexpectedly runs into Jack, and they discover they’re a perfect match in the bedroom. With each hot encounter, more tender feelings surface, but between the age gap, not being out in Ames Bridge, and Luke’s need to come into his own, do they dare be more to each other?
REVIEW:
Well lol. I didn’t know this was a part of a series. Oops. But have no fear. If you want to read this and haven’t the first two, you won’t be lost. This can be read as a standalone. I wasn’t lost at all. And it was quite good. Definitely gave you that small town feel. Nosy neighbors, bigots and all.
Luke is fed up with his life. Not that he don’t love his family but he’s tired of being smothered and babied. Yes, he almost died at birth, but he’s very healthy now. He’s 21. He’s not a kid. And right now this young man has his eyes set on someone he really wants to know. Intimately. But no one knows he’s gay. And what if Jack isn’t. He’s pretty sure he’s been getting looks from Jack but he’s not for sure. How can he get Jack’s attention? And more so, will Jack be ok with his scars and what he really wants? Frustrated beyond belief at his family and this small town, Luke decides he needs a break. He goes to a club and finds someone he never expected. Jack. They both realize what they want and with each other and forge ahead. But trying to keep secret in this town is so hard. And before this relationship goes any farther, Jack wants Luke to have more life experience. But both are getting in deep and secrets are being exposed. And now they have to decide….do they keep going or will the pressure be too much?
I love Luke. Gah, he just the best. He fought his way back from death as a baby and just wants to be normal. He just wants to be happy. He wants to find a man who will be happy with him. And one that will not look at him with horror over his scars. One that won’t coddle him and give him what he needs sexually. If he could just get out of this town and away from his smothering family. But if he left he’d never get to see Jack. And he really wants to see Jack. He just isn’t sure if Jack wants him. But oh Jack does. He remembers Luke as a little boy and now he sees this beautiful young man before him and he WANTS. Since he’s come back and taken over that inn, Luke is all he’s wanted. But he’s not sure if Luke wants him and Jack’s not out. And obviously Luke isn’t either. And with these small town bigots, he’s not sure he can do it. Granted there are other couples out in this town, so maybe it won’t be as bad, but still. It’s a risk. But what I love about Jack, is from the beginning, he never saw Luke’s scar. He never saw him as different. He just saw Luke. He saw the beauty of that young man.
I think in life that’s all any of us want. Someone to look beyond the scars. Whether it be the inner or outer. Someone to see past everything and see who we are. Someone to love us no matter what the past held. So if you find that, and it’s true, hold on for all you’ve got. Don’t let anyone discourage you no matter what. Age doesn’t matter, skin color, sex or whatever in between. All that matters is the love.
