REVIEW:
Daniela Jeffries is a new to me author and I am glad I gave her a shot. This book was so different from what I was expecting but it pulled me in and I really enjoyed getting to know the main characters.
I absolutely LOVED Dragon. He was such an enigma. A professed asexual who used sex and power for his advantage. A great mind who did bad things simply to relieve boredom. A man with no remorse for his actions yet a stronger moral code than many non-criminals. His world and his businesses fascinated me and I was VERY sad that it was such a minor part of the tale.
I also loved the growing connection between Noire and Dragon. I loved seeing Noire gain information from Dragon almost against his will and in turn Noire shared some of his history also almost against his will. Seeing the byplay and how it revealed the men’s true natures was well done. I easily connected to them both and even with Dragon being cold and calculating and seemingly without conscience, I LOVED him because of what was lurking underneath the hard exterior.
There were some noticeable inconsistencies in the story timeline as well as in key details such as the Dragon’s age. It was minor but prevalent enough to make me have to stop and go back and figure out if I was mistaken or not. It was a distraction that could have been easily corrected which saddened me because this story had a lot of potential to be fantastic.
I also felt like this story was incomplete in that I felt like I understood Dragon’s fascination with Noire but I never really understood Noire’s side of things. ESPECIALLY when he declared himself in love. I needed more of these men outside the patient/doctor setting to really feel like this was more than just infatuation.
I was also disappointed that the ending left me wanting so much more. This was totally just a start to a longer story in my opinion. For me, it felt like it ended just as the good stuff was about to begin. These men have a strong connection that was mostly left unexplored due to circumstances of the plot, Then when they finally make it out and move forward, it just…ended. Maybe there will be a sequel where we realize the promises the ending leave open. If not, it’s pretty much up to you as a reader to determine the way things really turn out in the future. Maybe you will like that kind of ending. For me, it felt frustrating.
Overall I enjoyed this story because the characters were amazing and pull to know more was intense. The world was harsh and gritty and there was so much potential for growth of these men and their budding connection. I just wish there was more and that the inconsistencies were not there, but I would gladly read this again and read any future sequels, especially if they answer the many questions I still have about these men.
