Sam’s self-worth is at a low between losing a leg in Iraq and the reaction of his recent dates to his disability, but there may be new hope for love.
Samuel Oates returned from the war in Iraq missing part of one leg and much of his self-worth. He’s transitioned from his job as medic to becoming a med tech at the regional hospital. While enjoying his usual noontime hobby of watching hot construction workers at the nearby project, he meets someone else who also enjoys the view. Jorge is a middle-aged mystery but seems to be interested in Sam without the complications he keeps experiencing with other men.
Later that night, he discovers his dream construction worker trolling at the local leather bar. Their hook-up leaves Sam with his typical feeling that he couldn’t ever do any better than a quickie. But the next day, Jorge returns and Sam’s attraction to him grows.
Juggling two men and a job he likes, Sam must discover a way to find someone who will meet his needs without feeding his insecurities.
REVIEW:
Construction by Jon Keys is a fast, easy reading novella. Told from Sam’s point of view, we can see how his time in Iraq and his disability have affected the way he views himself and his ability to find long term love. And of course he goes looking for love in the wrong places.
Sam’s character could have had a lot more development. I feel like we only see the very surface of what’s going on. His disability and the way it is treated by some men and then how he views things with Jorge when they meet and then become an item. I feel like we needed to see how of Sam’s self and not just a brushing glance at the outside. But this is a short book, so maybe that’s the reason.
Jorge was by far my favourite character. He seems determined and while we really don’t get to know him either, I like the way Sam sees him. He is a constant both with his attention to Sam and the way he treats Sam’s missing part of his leg.
The name of the book is interesting. Sam has a series of encounters with a construction worker and Sam meets Jorge while they are watching construction workers. I presume the name is about Sam and Jorge building a relationship. And it works, but I think perhaps when you start the story you are expecting something else. But once I finished the story I liked the name and how it worked into the plot.
Overall I enjoyed this book as a good, light hearted and happy read. It isn’t full of angst or problems and it really suited my mood when I read it.
