The last thing Sebastian Zeller wants is to be pack Alpha. But when the pack leader, his uncle Ron, is attacked, he has no choice but to leave his beloved Colorado mountains and fulfill his duty as Ron’s heir—at least until his uncle recovers. In the meantime, he intends to lure the attacker out… and make them pay.
When Ron gets wind of Sebastian’s plan to catch the attacker, he doesn’t like the idea of risking his heir. That’s where Jaxon Reedis comes in—he’ll balance protecting the dark and sexy werewolf with pretending to be his personal assistant. He’s walking a fine line that requires all his foxy wit and craftiness… and that’s on top of the inescapable feeling that he and Sebastian are meant for each other. When the attacker returns, will they be able to maintain their deepening bond when danger threatens to tear down everything they’re building?
REVIEW:
I think what I like best about this series is the both the wide variety of shifters utilized and the fact that when Nose to Tail Inc is involved, you have no idea what or who you’re going to be dealing with. While I will admit to hoping that I would see the characters from the previous story make a reappearance, I enjoyed this newest installment to the series enough that I wasn’t disappointed for long to realize that wouldn’t be the case.
When Sebastian’s Uncle Ron is attacked and nearly killed, Sebastian is both forced to step into his Uncle’s shoes and determined to catch those responsible. Catching wind of his nephew’s idiotic plans, Ron then turns to Nose to Tail Inc and its owner, Richard, in order to hire a bodyguard for Sebastian on the sly. While Jaxon probably wouldn’t be pegged as a bodyguard at first glance, his smaller stature and ability to make himself seem harmless and naïve are part of what makes him so good at his job. Sebastian certainly doesn’t have him pegged as an extra layer of security, even if he does know his uncle planted Jaxon in order to keep an eye on him.
The story that follows was entertaining, action packed and chock full of enough UST to keep me happily turning the pages. Both Sebastian and Jaxon were great characters; both men kind of defied expectations and I really liked that. Sebastian is supposed to be the next Alpha (according to his uncle, anyway) and there are certain expectations for someone in his position. Sebastian doesn’t want to be the Alpha though; he’s most happy when he can hide away in his house at the edge of the pack lands working on his design business. He may look like an Alpha male but having to be the one in charge practically gives him hives…and probably a stress ulcer or two eventually. Jaxon, as I stated previously, doesn’t look like what anyone would think of when they hear the word ‘bodyguard’ but that doesn’t make him any less able or willing to go kick someone’s backside if necessary. He’s good at his job, thank you very much!
I loved these two together and the feel of this story was completely different for me from the first book; where the previous story was adorable and full of family feels because of the multitude of children present, this one felt more ‘grown up’ to me due to both the action and the main characters ability to spend more intimate time together without the fear of children interrupting. I really enjoyed this one and the differences between this book and the first one have only solidified my eagerness to continue with this series; I really have no idea what the author will come up with next and I look forward to finding out!
