REVIEW:
Out of the Ocean is a good length novella that tells the story of Cal, a 50 year old fisherman and Scott a rich boy who are shipwrecked by the same storm on two different boats. They find each other in the middle of the ocean and pool their resources to survive.
I didn’t connect with the shipwreck. It didn’t feel sad or scary. But once they were in their life boats I started to feel the desperation. Once they are together it is instant attraction between the two. There is no slow burn here. They meet and they are in lust and then love. With a steady diet of raw fish and not much water would leave you feeling pretty gross, but somehow these two manage some rimming and making out. I was a little bit undecided about how I felt about the sexual interaction on the life raft. On one hand fearing for your life makes you want to reaffirm life. But no teeth cleaning, no personal hygiene and a general feeling of dehydration makes me think you wouldn’t be up for much fun.
Once they are rescued, I enjoyed the plot line. It moves well. There is very little angst in this book. It moves along well and was a good enjoyable read. Not very complex as story lines go. But overall it was a good story and I was glad that Cal and Scott found each other.
