It’s day one of Darren Corliss’s career as a detective, and not only has he been assigned a notoriously difficult partner, but the guy might also be a pill-popping dirty cop. Internal Affairs needs proof, and Darren gets to be their eyes and ears whether he wants to or not.
Detective Andreas Ruffner doesn’t play by the rules, and he doesn’t play well with others. With bodies piling up and a list of suspects who are way above his pay grade, the last thing he needs is a wet-behind-the-ears kid for a partner. Or babysitter. Not even if that partner is easy on the eyes.
As Darren gains Andreas’s hard-won trust, they both realize there’s more than just mutual suspicion simmering beneath the surface. But their investigation is heating up as quickly as their relationship, and Darren has no choice but to go along with Andreas’s unorthodox—and borderline unethical—methods. As IA puts the squeeze on Darren to give up the man he’s falling for, he has to wonder—is Andreas the only cop left in this town who isn’t dirty?
STORY REVIEW:
As I have said before L. A. Witt is a hit or miss author for me. Cari Z. is an author I have read before but not enough to really say for sure if she is a favorite. Together these authors produced Risky Behavior which was a solid hit for me and just helped solidify why I almost always auto buy L.A. Witt even knowing she is sometimes a miss for me and is placing Cari Z firmly into the running to become an auto buy shortly.
This story started out very strong by giving me a clear picture of who the characters present themselves as to others, but I could tell there was more hidden underneath the surface. I connected from the very start because I just knew there was so much more to these men and I was eager to see how they interacted.
Andreas was my favorite character because there was so much suspense surrounding him. Was he a dirty cop? What was his ID bracelet all about? Was he really the asshole he appeared to be?
Andreas was absolutely vital to every aspect of this story and was perfectly integrated into everything. Without him being carefully crafted the way he was, the plot, the romance, the suspense all fell apart and I LOVED it.
I really enjoyed the plot. It was OTT while also being realistic and tense. It was the star of the show on the surface while also quietly helping the budding friendship and romance develope. The plot forced these men to talk and compromise and get to know one another. It forced honesty and some very hard decisions to be made. It was a great mystery that held me captive to the very end.
My favorite thing about this story though was the slow build romance. The lust forming between the two partners was well represented. I could feel the attraction simmering with the potential to be explosive, yet there were so many reasons not to do anything about it. As the plot progressed, things got hard for these men but through it all the attraction grew and trust formed. So when things moved past friendship to explosive chemicals, I was all in. I believed every minute and enjoyed the ride.
I totally fell hard for these men and their love. It was hard to see the pot unfold knowing there was a potential for so much to go wrong. And so much DID go wrong. But the ending was fabulous and the HFN promises to be a fantastic HEA. I can’t wait for more in this series.
NARRATION REVIEW:
Michael Ferraiuolo did a fantastic job on this narration. He brought out the characters well and the tension could be cut with a knife. This was the type of story he excels at reading and really did it justice.
