Home, love, and possibilities he never imagined are waiting for Billy Joe to claim them. But first he needs to escape the horrors of his past.
A twisted act of cruelty and prejudice drives Billy Joe from his Mississippi home, and he makes it as far as Pennsylvania where his car breaks down just as the year’s first snowstorm blows in. Fortunately, Carlos is there to lend a hand.
Carlos is no stranger to hardship. His family rejected him for being gay, but with determination, he put himself through school and became a librarian. Carlos sees the same willpower in Billy, and he wants to help Billy and his son succeed in a new life that is very different from the one they left behind. With his support, they start to adjust, and before long, both men want more than encouragement from each other. They want the chance for a future together, but their families have other ideas and Billy’s will stop at nothing to get what they want.
REVIEW:
Billy Joe sees something one night that scares him to the bone.
Billy Joe has been raised in a white supremacist family with their values deeply engrained. His father is one of the leaders so Billy Joe knows he’ll never be able to be the person he truly is whilst living under his father’s roof, not only this but he will not allow his son Tyler to be raised to hate everyone who is different. So, Billy Joe packs himself and Tyler up and leaves in the middle of the night.
Billy Joe makes it to Pennsylvania where his car breaks down, luckily Carlos finds Billy Joe and Tyler on the side of the road in a snow storm. Carlos is a librarian at the university who, after getting them back on the road invites Billy Joe back to his apartment block to try to get them somewhere to stay for the night. While they’re talking Carlos, being the kind-hearted person he is decides to help Billy Joe get a job at the same university he works at. Carlos knows Billy Joe is running scared, he’s got the same look on his face that Carlos himself had six years ago when he ran away from his family!
The attraction between Billy Joe and Carlos is instant and momentous, considering the fact that neither man has had a successful relationship thus far!! You know this relationship isn’t going to be smooth sailing because not only has one man been raised to hate everyone different, he’s been taught that anyone of Carlos’s decent should be sent back where they came from! Carlos has been ostracized from his family when he was outed by his cousin who happens to be the biggest closeted gay man around.
All in all, this was a heartbreaking tale of two men who are meant to be together to help each other overcome their pasts. As always Andrew has outdone himself with this story. I urge you to go out and get your copy so you can get lost in Carlos and Billy Joe’s world.
