BLURB:
He didn’t want an alpha to save him, but fate had other ideas…
Braun Etting was raised to know his place as an omega by his alpha father’s cruel words and fast fists, and he expects nothing but violence from the alpha who may one day mate him. His older brother Kell mated a cruel alpha who abuses him daily, and Braun is terrified of that seemingly inevitable future. When Braun’s father dies in a car crash, leaving Braun an orphan, he’s sent to a halfway house for omegas. But on his fourth night there, he witnesses a horrifying crime that sends him fleeing to the streets alone—and edging into his first heat.
Tarek Bloom is settled in his workaholic, single lifestyle, even if it is somewhat embarrassing to be a twenty-eight year-old unmated alpha. He enjoys his job as a constable, helping people and solving problems, so he isn’t prepared for his life to flip upside-down when he walks into his beta friend Dex’s apartment to help with “a problem.”
The problem turns out to be an unmated, nearly in-heat omega orphan who Dex and his husband rescued off the street last night. The even bigger problem is that Tarek feels the mating bond for this terrified omega immediately—and he’s pretty sure the omega feels it, too. But Braun hates alphas as a general rule, and no way is he giving in to the bond. All mating leads to is violence and suffering, so no thank you. But Tarek’s gentle kindness slips under Braun’s emotional shields, and Braun begins to want. To dream. All Braun has ever known is violent alphas, but Tarek is determined to make Braun trust him—and to trust in the idea of their happily ever after.
NOTE: This is a non-shifter Omegaverse story with alpha/omega/beta dynamics, heats, knotting, and mpreg. In this world, omegas are second-class citizens with few civil rights and almost no protections under the law. Trigger warnings for physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
REVIEW:
Oh man what a way to start this series! And people wonder why I love the alpha/omega trope so much. This kind of book right here is why. Everyone always makes the omegas out to be weaklings or the lesser sex and the opposite is true. And I love that this series is bringing omegas out of that oppression. Yes they have to go through hell, abuse and so much but just because someone is classified as a certain ‘gender’, doesn’t make them weak. Another reminder….don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
Braun is used to being beaten down. Being an omega means to most everyone that he is weak. Only good for the womb in his body. But Braun is sick to death of that attitude. He isn’t weak. He is just as much a human as anyone else. But because of laws, he’s stuck. Having been abused with his brother by their father, Braun has grown to hate alphas. Especially seeing how his brother is abused by his so-called mate. Alphas are nothing but bullies and assholes and he wants no part. But his father will leave him no choice. Until an accident kills his father and he is now facing life in a ‘foster home’ for omegas. After a few nights in that place, Braun witnesses a crime and ends up running for his life. He is caught in the city by two alphas and he’s terrified he will be raped and with being so close to his heat. But fate intervenes in the form of his nurse from the hospital, Serge and his husband, Dex. They take him home and protect him. Dex’s friend, Tarek, a constable, is brought in and Braun immediately feels the bond. But he refuses to acknowledge it. He will not be forced to be with an abusive alpha. But Tarek wears him down with his kindness and submission of his own. With Tarek’s tenderness and safety, soon Braun decides to give it a chance. But circumstances and life have a way of making things very bad, including violence regarding his brother, and Braun isn’t sure if he can trust Tarek as his alpha. Through patience and a lot of groveling and time, Tarek is determined to show he’s different. Braun just has to let go and trust.
Oh man. Braun and Tarek. Dex and Serge. These are the main guys and I adore them all. I love Brain the most because, hey, I’m an omega girl. Lol. I love the ‘underdog’. The one that ends up usually coming back to bite you in the ass. The ones despite their being considered ‘weak’, are the ones that will rip you a new one. I love Braun’s braveness. He knows how much trouble he can get into but he stands up for himself. The best he can. He doesn’t give up. He keeps fighting no matter how the deck is stacked against him. And there were some close calls. But Braun know he should be treated like a human he is and not a dog. He does all he can to fight for other omegas, no matter what it could cost him. Which brings me to his mate, Tarek. By law, Tarek could force Braun to be his mate. But he refuses. He believes in omegas being equal. He believes in love and a relationship. And he does everything he can to prove he is a good person to Braun. He is patient and gentle. Kind and understanding. He’s willing to submit himself, and alphas don’t do that. It goes against their nature. But for Braun, he does. Just to show Braun, to him, he is worthy and valuable. Oh how I love him. He makes mistakes, yes, and often has to start back at step one. But anything worth anything is worth fighting for. And he does. Which makes him the perfect alpha. Fallible but humble. Just. And to add to these two are Dex and Serge. Who have their own prejudices against them because they are betas. But they believe in equality for everyone too. They are both so kind and loving. Big-hearted and just special. Makes me wish I had these kinds of friends in my own life.
This is one book and another series I’m going to wholeheartedly recommend. Take care of the blurb and it’s warning. If abuse of any kind triggers you, this may not be for you. Omegas are considered beneath dirt and often abused or raped in this story. So please take care. But with this story comes several messages. ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’ is a big one. Another is hold on to hope. There is often many shitstorms in life, but hold on to hope that things can change. Be a voice. And learn that not everyone is bad. There are those that are good in the world. For those, let go and trust. They may make mistakes. It’s inevitable. But keep trusting and believing.
