One burned and broken man finds his way home. Can he find peace in the arms of a man easy to love?
Justin made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, battling domestic terrorism, never the man he really was, using hate to avenge the death of his best friend. The friend he’d killed.
What he doesn’t count on is getting shot, and if he’s going to die, he wants it to be on Crooked Tree soil. Home.
Sam is as much a part of Crooked Tree as any of the families, and the offer to buy into the ranch is a dream come true. But falling for a hidden, secretive, injured man isn’t the way to keep his head in the game.
STORY REVIEW:
Hell yeah! I have been waiting for this one to come out in audio for what feels like forever. I HAD TO KNOW what happened to Justin! And oh man it was way worse than I ever imagined. I was totally invested from the previous books. This series needs to be read in order as all the books are woven together very well and details build on one another as the series progresses.
I have to admit, this book was OTT in a lot of ways, but it worked well for me. Yes, the plot was slightly unrealistic in the way it ended, but I didn’t care. I was so caught up in Justin getting out and healing, that the ease of the ending was something that made me happy.
The emotions in this one were off the charts. I hurt for Justin and Adam and his family. Reading about Justin’s history and how he walled himself off and turned into this hardened mess was hard for me. I wanted to hug everyone and tell them to get their heads out of their asses and just talk to each other. And reading about Justin’s ongoing internal battles and struggles because of his history was tense. The anger, the hatred, and then the start to healing was just so tangible. I loved every minute even when i wanted to cry.
I do however, wish more time had been dedicated to Sam and his backstory. I felt like I knew of Sam, but I didn’t really know Sam. I also wish the romance was more developed. I feel like this was a case of instant need to heal someone turns to love. I am not sure I understood the love or feel like it was something with a foundation that could withstand the future. I mean, I totally LOVED Justin and Sam being in love and I totally LOVED the way Sam helped Justin so freely and without judgement. But why was Sam able to do so? Why didn’t he question anything? Why did he allow Justin to be such an ass sometimes and not demand an explanation or apology? I just didn’t know Sam well enough to answer these questions.
I am still absolutely loving this series and I kind of want Rob to get a story. I want to see more of these men in the future. And even though I struggled a bit with the romance, I still highly recommend this story because the emotions were great and the resolution to many outstanding questions was well done. I really did enjoy my listening experience and will listen to this one again for sure.
NARRATION REVIEW:
Sean Crisden has narrated this entire series and I have enjoyed every minute of his reading. He brought out the character’s personalities and the emotions perfectly.
