BLURB:
US Marshal Jaeger Tripp is assigned to the Federal Witness Protection Program. The hurt and destruction he’s seen—along with protecting criminals who are only cooperating with the authorities to keep themselves out of jail—have left him with a bleak and jaded view of both life and people. His current assignment is Wren O’Riley, a computer wizard who witnessed a high-profile cartel hit.
To Jaeger, Wren is the same as any other job. He must protect him long enough to get him to testify at trial, and his personal feelings have no place in his work and must be set aside. But that’s easier said than done. On the run and fighting for their lives, Jaeger and Wren can’t help but grow closer. And Jaeger can’t help seeing beyond Wren’s nerdy exterior to a man who might be just what Jaeger needs to settle his soul and capture his heart—if they survive long enough to get that chance.
REVIEW:
This series has redeemed itself to me. Another good one. It was actually good to see one of the Knights be a good guy. In a manner of speaking. And really surprising to see the way it ended. Knowing how evil some beings are in this series, it was surprising to see a spark of good.
Jaeger has a view of people that is actually well founded. He has seen all the bad life has to offer by working with the Marshall’s service. He has seen so many criminals use the service to get away with murder, literally. So when a new assignment comes to him, he isn’t looking forward to it. He will do it because it’s his job but he is so sick of people and their criminalistic ways. When he meets Wren he is disgusted. How could this computer ‘geek’ not know his family is a bunch of criminals? He just wants to get through this month and get the young man to his trial and be done with it all. Maybe finally move into seclusion somewhere. If only he could control the urges he feels to kill. Being in this line of work, he can kinda get away with it if need be. But he doesn’t know if he could last long retired somewhere. The longer, though, he gets to know Wren, the more things are changing. Sure the attraction was there from the beginning, but he would never cross that line. But somehow Wren is getting under his skin. And Jaeger wants to cross many lines with him. He knows nothing will ever come of it but he figures he can use him for the time he has him and it will be ok. But being around Wren is causing him to see things in a different light and maybe things are going to change after all.
You know, I love when the supposed bad guys turn out to be such softies. Jaeger for all his huffing and chest puffing, can’t seem to keep Wren from getting under his skin. And poor Wren is caught in the crossfire of some messed up stuff going on in family. He knew his Mami kept him sheltered and a little naive, but he had no idea how corrupt his family really was until looking at figures on his computer were showing things weren’t adding up. To beat it all he sees a murder in front of him, loses his lover, and is now on the run for his life. And that isn’t even all. He gets betrayed and almost killed. I feel so bad for Wren. All he wants is a quiet life, maybe in Spain with his Mami now. And since he is seeing newer sides of Jaeger, maybe Jaeger added in the mix to go with him. He wants love. Someone to get him. But life just won’t let up on him. Jaeger, in his gruffiness, is seeing a whole new side to Wren. He is gutted that he didn’t see Wren for what he really is. He just wants to keep Wren safe. He doesn’t think he will ever get more than that, but darn it all if he finally isn’t thinking about what life would be life if he could settle down with someone while ‘retiring’. He finally is starting to feel a peace that he’s never had before. Even in the midst of all the storms going on around them. He wants Wren with something he has never felt before. When things come to a head, they both have to make hard decisions. And man is it awful. I was gutted. (Nope. Can’t tell you lol.)
Life really has a way or throwing curveballs. Just when you finally figure out what you want in life, sometimes it can be a real bitch and throw a monkey wrench in the works. I really like the way Jaeger was written. It was the most ‘real’ out of all the books this far. Definitely some surprises. People aren’t perfect. They have faults, but also dreams and desires. They have moments where sometimes there seems to be no way things could change, but then things surprise them and they get the one thing their heart desires. Just when they think there is no hope, Hope springs eternal.
