Country hat act Markus Kane is skeptical when he’s asked to do a joint tour. He hasn’t seen Sebastian Longchamps since he gave up drinking—and since their compulsion for each other nearly cost them both their livelihoods. But Markus’s career is on the downhill slope, while the country-fried Cajun rocker’s star is still rising. His label thinks it’ll be a match made in ticket-sales heaven.
Sebastian knows better. One wrong move and Markus will break his heart all over again. This time he has much more to lose.
Time has changed both men, though, and while Markus and Sebastian try to fight their addictions, the big music industry machine has plans for them that don’t include a quiet retirement. Can Markus convince Sebastian that there are things in life more important than adrenaline and control? And can Sebastian make Markus understand that all he really wants is his music and his man?
REVIEW:
Fighting Addiction was a really interesting book. Right from the start I loved how the title meant so much to the story. The surface addictions of drinking are just the start. Both men have a powerful love (addiction) to the music and each other too. But more addictions are throughout the book as the men struggle to find their places in the world and together.
This book had so many things that I love in it. And music is the big one. Sebastian and Markus working together to write songs. The descriptions were great. I could see them together writing and playing. The other band members were really good secondary characters and while they don’t have a lot of page time, when they were there they added to the story and helped develop what I knew of the two MCs.
The managers for the two men and their personal assistants were good. I have no idea why Seb’s personal assistant stayed with him, he was an ass to her a whole heap. But they added to my enjoyment of the story.
I found the start of the book a little messy to read. Lots of things happening and a couple of times I had to clarify who was who. But once I read past the first chapter or so the writing became smooth and a joy to read. The characters are interesting and Seb and Markus are a great combo of personalities both when they are together and when they are apart.
I would have loved the ending to have been a little cleaner. Several things are left for you to imagine that they resolved well. I am one of those people who likes the end of their books all wrapped up in a neat little bow. The ending took this from a 4.5 to a 4 heart review for me. I felt like the book was running along really well and then it was just finished.
Overall a great book and a fun read. Addiction was a great theme and so well done.
