REVIEW:
Back Where He Belongs by Isobel Starling is a happy Christmas story that ends in a good happily ever after. Kier has run away from Scotland 5 years ago to avoid coming out to his family, he has travelled and settled on a sheep station in Australia. Now back home and broken down on the side of the road, the love of his life, Douglas, rescues him.
The only issue I had with the story was that I felt no connection to the sex scene. It didn’t have any emotional bond for me. And I didn’t find it overly hot. But I think that is because of the kink involved, which I won’t spoil. That being said, the kink is nothing to worry about, I don’t believe it would upset anyone. It just didn’t do anything for me and it felt distant and flat. I am sure for many people this won’t be the case.
The thing that I did feel throughout the story was Kier’s uncertainty. He didn’t want to come out and be open 5 years ago, so he left. And now 5 years on, he understands that it didn’t make him happy, but he has grown up. He is still unsure though, and it rings true for the character and the story. He needs the reassurance from Douglas that everything will work out if they try again.
The ending is really nice. I will let you enjoy the scene without comment from me on its contents, but it brings the story together and has a sweetness to it that is perfect for the book. Overall a very enjoyable Christmas read.
