Cowboy Kelly is Midnight Rodeo royalty. When his family sold the outfit to Darque and Knight, Kelly stayed on as security of sorts, using his skills as a warlock to keep the mundane world from colliding with the wild and wooly rodeo. None of his years of experience have prepared him for what happens when he meets Jon, though.
Rodeo reporter Jon keeps coming back to the Midnight Rodeo, even if he doesn’t know why. In fact, these days he can’t remember anything about his life. He just travels, following Darque and Knight across the country. When Kelly realizes that Jon has been on the receiving end of a bit of magical amnesia, he knows he has to do something. He thinks he’ll just help Jon move on, but that’s before he falls for the guy. How is Kelly supposed to help Jon get his memory back when all he wants is for Jon to stay with him forever?
REVIEW:
I just love this series! Just, flat out, I adore the characters and I’m always entertained by the stories themselves. In this latest installment to the Midnight Rodeo series, Jon, a journalist who follows the rodeo circuit finds himself obsessively following the Darque and Knight rodeo without knowing why, only that he can’t seem to stop doing it. Blessed (or cursed depending on who you talk to) with a form of ‘sight’ that allows him to see through the glamours surrounding the rodeo and the people who work there, it was deemed necessary to remove this knowledge from Jon’s mind for the safety of those who call the Midnight Rodeo home. This has unforeseen complications, however, and now those that inadvertently caused the problem Jon is now laboring under have to figure out how to fix it.
This was a very character driven story and while I’d have loved to have gotten more of a repeat look at the inner workings of the rodeo, I was quite happy with this. (Never mind that I’ve gotten plenty of glimpses of the rodeo in stories past! :p) Jon, despite (or perhaps because of) his abilities and the memory problems he’s dealing with, was a nice complex character that I enjoyed seeing muddle through all the uncertainty and confusion of both his past and future. I also really enjoyed the unique spin that was given to his abilities; it certainly wasn’t what I’d been thinking when I saw him referenced as a psychic! He and Kelly together were pretty much perfect and I totally understood how torn Kelly was in wanting to do what he could to help Jon while also being afraid to lose the man that was coming to mean everything to him. I do wish I’d gotten to personally know Kelly more over the course of the story but I do understand that Jon was the main focus here so I wasn’t too torn up about it. (The hot bedroom scenes between the two also helped smooth over the mild disappointment. :D)
Overall, this was a really enjoyable installment in one of my favorite series. I enjoyed getting to see glimpses of the characters I’ve come to like and care about while learning about some new ones I hope to see more of in the future. If you like stories about cowboys or the rodeo and think the paranormal twist sounds interesting, I’d highly recommend checking the series out!
