BLURB:
The attraction between Brent Berkheimer and Scott Spearman peels the wallpaper, but Brent is Scott’s boss, and they’re both too professional to go beyond flirting. Their priorities realign after Scott is badly injured in an accident that costs him his hearing, and Brent realizes what is truly important… he wants Scott.
Scott pushes Brent away at first, fearing a new romance will just add to his problems, but perhaps he will find unexpected strength and solace in Brent’s support as he struggles to communicate with the world in a new way.
Just as they decide the chance of a happy future together is worth the risk, Scott and Brent discover darker challenges in their way – including evidence that the “accident” Scott suffered may not have been so accidental.
REVIEW:
Brent Berkheimer is in his thirties, manager of the garage that his “crush” twenty-two-year-old Scott Spearman works as a mechanic. Brent and Scott both know that they’re attracted to each other but as they boss and employee they feel there’s nothing to be done about the attraction. For the last several years all they’ve allowed themselves to do is flirt and tease each other!
Then, Scott is involved in a horrific car accident where he receives a traumatic head injury that leaves him deaf. Nobody is sure if Scott’s deafness is going to be permanent or short-term although Scott is resigned to the fact that he is going to be deaf for the rest of his life. What surprises and overwhelms Scott is the love and support he receives from everyone at the shop. When James (from Heart Unseen) comes to see him Scott’s confidence gets a boost, he realises, just because he is now deaf it doesn’t mean his life is over.
When Scott has his accident Brent realises that he really is a coward. He knows he should have told Scott years ago he has feelings for him now, he’s not sure if he’s going to want anything to do with him! Brent and Scott spend time getting to know each other on a personal level while Scott is healing. Brent still is sure he’s good enough for Scott, a hold-over from his childhood but they’re both determined to see where this new development in their relationship is going to take them as they both have a lot of issues both old and new to work though.
As you read Heart Unheard you get down to the nitty gritty of their lives/issues, Brent has major ones about his father dying when he as 14. Scott has his own issues to deal with, the major one is the way he was forced to come out! I heartily recommend that you read Heart Unseen first as you are introduced to the characters in Heart Unheard and you get to know the storylines that carry over.
