BLURB:
David Lauriston has been recuperating at Lord Murdo Balfour’s Laverock estate for the last five months. At Laverock, he has regained his health and confidence and has found—with Murdo—more happiness and contentment than he has never known before.
David is all too aware that some day soon he will have to leave Laverock—and Murdo—and return to his legal practice in Edinburgh, just as Murdo will have to return to his life in London. But when David’s mentor, Patrick Chalmers, asks David to return to Edinburgh to visit him on his deathbed, it seems that day has come sooner than either David or Murdo would have wished.
Chalmers begs David to undertake one last piece of business for him: to secure the future of Chalmers’s daughter Elizabeth. But to carry out his old mentor’s wishes, David must travel to London, with Murdo.
No sooner have the two men arrived in the capital than they encounter Murdo’s ruthlessly manipulative father, who reveals a shocking secret that rocks David to his foundations. What’s more, when David discovers Elizabeth is facing far greater danger than even her father feared, he is determined to help her, no matter the cost to his own safety.
As the stakes rise, it is Murdo who must choose what he is prepared to sacrifice to keep David at his side, and ask whether there is any possibility of lasting happiness for men like them.
REVIEW:
Oh I could not have been happier with this book! This whole series has been amazing and it just ended beautifully.
I have been stuck on David through this whole series. He is such a paragon of virtue with everything. It’s so refreshing to see someone stick to their principles in a time when things aren’t always so black and white. But even more so David has learned for the most part to let go and finally be truly happy. Although he has been miserable recovering from his shattered leg. Murdo has hired him, of a sort, to do work for him and to settle things with his Scotland estate that the previous owner severely screwed up. But alas, things can’t stay blissful. There is an undercurrent of tension as David thinks it’s time for him to go back to Edinburgh, even though he doesn’t want to. But feelings haven’t been made known and every time the discussion comes up, it gets sidetabled. Murdo asks of David though to wait until he returns from London and they will discuss it. But fate has a way of stepping in and things don’t quite go as planned.
Poor David. I feel so bad for him. He wants so bad to stay with Murdo and share their lives together but he isn’t quite sure of how Murdo feels and David still has to come to grips with being Murdo’s long time lover himself. A part of him can’t get past his upbringing and it causes him to hold back. And Murdo is noticing. On top of all this, he is losing his long time mentor, Chalmers. And it’s breaking his heart. Chalmers, on his deathbed, asks that David make sure his oldest daughter is safe and of course, David cannot refuse. He considers Elizabeth a friend of a sort, and after all she’s been through wants to see she is well. But everything is weighing on David. And when Murdo’s conniving father drops the blow he did, David’s world almost falls apart. He tries so hard to keep going and to keep his head up but it’s hard when life seems to get you at every turn. David is just one of those I want to wrap in bubble wrap and protect. Although he would be highly offended at that!. But he’s just an extraordinary character. He never gives up, no matter how hard it is for him and how badly sometimes he wants to. And I admire him for it. He is so deserving of someone to love him the way he wants to be loved. And of course, I cannot give away the ending. You will have to read for yourself if David gets all he yearns for. And if things have a way of working out.
This is a truly wonderful series! Very well written and a book and series I could not put down! I really hope you guys get these books. They are so worth it. Happy reading!
