Interview with Nic Starr for the release of Patrick’s Savior
I’m happy to be back to visit Love Bytes, this time with my latest release, Patrick’s Savior. Thank you so much for having me visit, Dani. I’m answering some questions that might give a little insight into me and my writing.
What do you hope your readers take away from this book?
I’m answering these questions after the devastation of the Las Vegas shooting, and while I want to provide a response that talks to the messages in the story, all I can think is I want people to be happy. I want my readers to be able to lose themselves in the story and to feel happiness and joy when the characters they’ve grown to know and love, find their happily ever after. Sometimes we just need a love story to bolster our spirits and help us cope with the disappointments and horrors of the real world.
What book is currently on your bedside table?
I have a couple of books on the go. I’m currently trying to read some of the older books that are on my Kindle (I’m a book hoarder) but I’m always attracted to the new and shiny. The current ebook underway is Love, Like Water by Rowan Speedwell. I asked for some ranch/cowboy story recommendations and this was suggested to me. The audiobook I’m listening to is Henry’s End by Julie A. Richman. I’ve only just started but I’m enjoying it so far. I’m also reading a book on the craft of writing by Stephen King. I find reading these types of books gives me new things to think about and helps keep me motivated, and hopefully my writing benefits. The last book I’m reading is called Interval Weight Loss by Dr Nick Fuller but we won’t talk about my reason for reading that one **wink**
What was your favourite book when you were a child?
I can’t pick one. There are a number of books that made a big impression on me and helped develop my obsession with reading. I grew up on a diet of Nancy Drew mysteries and I enjoyed reading The Hardy Boys too. I discovered V.C. Andrews in my first year of high school – wow, that was eye opening for an eleven-year-old! One of the first books I had to read in high school was Sara Dane by Catherine Gaskin which introduced me to the joy of sagas. Then Touch Not The Cat by Mary Stewart introduced me to mystery and romance. From that point I devoured anything I could get my hands on (this was before the age of ebooks) including my Nana’s Mills and Boones. This question prompted me to look at my bookshelves to see what books from my childhood are there – The Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie by May Gibbs, and Milly Molly Mandy by Joyce Lankester Brisley are two examples that I still have all these years later.
How many plot ideas are just waiting to be written? Can you tell us about one?
I’m too scared to even go and count the ideas of my list! LOL I don’t think I’ll be running out of stories for a long while. In fact, I just need more time to write. My ideas are in various stages. I have some ideas that are a simple sentence or two, to prompt me on the story I want to tell. Others are more fully fleshed out and a few have outlines, and some even have scenes written. I have scenes written on a new paranormal series – something very different for me! World building and shifters – it’s very different to writing contemporary but lots of fun.
What’s for dinner tonight? What would you rather be eating?
Tonight’s it’s lasagne and it’s a bought one from the shop **hangs head in shame** (I’m a foodie and love cooking but I can’t convince my kids that my homemade lasagne is better than shop bought). I’d rather be eating Japanese or Korean – perhaps some sashimi followed by a nice hot pot – flavoursome broth where I can plunge in and cook some fresh seafood and thinly sliced marinated beef and veggies. Yum!
Thanks for having me, Dani.
Nic xx

How do you find love when someone doesn’t want you to be happy?
Patrick Edwards is dealing with a double whammy. Unwanted attention from his housemate’s boyfriend is making him feel uncomfortable in his own home, and he’s facing uncertainty with his employment as an administrative assistant at the local elementary school. He finally breathes a sigh of relief when a friend puts him in contact with Simon, who has a vacant room.
Simon Dawson is a paramedic who doesn’t hesitate to help Patrick. After all, no one should live in a house where they don’t feel safe. Simon develops feelings for Patrick, but doesn’t act on them—Patrick’s moved from a bad situation and doesn’t need his new housemate hitting on him. However, a weekend away changes everything when Simon realizes Patrick returns his feelings.
But someone doesn’t want Patrick and Simon to be happy. A series of strange letters arrive at the house, and things will get a lot worse before the two men get their happily ever after.
Patrick’s Savior is a novel of approximately 69k words. It is part of a series but can be read stand-alone.
