Foxling Toka has served the Soldati king for centuries, and now he attends to the kingdom’s cherished Soldati prince. It’s a position of honor, and as Toka helps the once-human prince adapt to their magical realm, he finds joy in their friendship. He also grows bolder in his encounters with Rayner, Soldati warrior and the king’s second. But the laws are clear: servants and Soldati are not permitted to mate. It doesn’t matter that Toka lost his heart to the dashing cad long ago.
Rayner never imagined he would fall in love with a servant, but the clever and beautiful foxling has ensnared him, and he resents the regulations keeping them apart. When an arrogant and spiteful king visits from a neighboring realm, Rayner is in danger of losing everything. But Soldati warriors don’t surrender, and he intends to fight all the harder to keep Toka where he belongs—in Rayner’s arms.
REVIEW:
I really like this series. The novellas are shorter than I would like them to be… because they are really good. I love the characters, I love the settings, and I love the story lines. In book two of the series, The Foxling Soldati, Ms. Cochet brings us the story of the Foxling Toka, who we met in The Soldati Prince. I’ll be honest and tell you that I enjoyed book one so much that I went back and re-read it right before reading this one, so I got to read them both as a continuous story. Now, if you remember, I gave book one a 3.0 because of its length. This one wasn’t much longer, but together, they made a good read.
Toka is a Foxling servant in the Soldati Kingdom. He is immortal and has served the Soldati King for centuries. Now, however, he is working directly for the new Soldati Prince, who is still adjusting to life in this magical land. In book one, we got hints that Toka was up to something with the King’s right hand man and best friend, Rayner. But Rayner is a Soldati and Toka is a Foxling servant. The two can never go further than mutual affection. They are forbidden by law to mate.
When the cruel King of the Bear Kingdom next door comes calling, things get bad, quite quickly. Can their love survive the trials and pain they will each go through?
I highly recommend this novella and the one that proceeds it. I’m hoping there will be future installments, and I’ll tell you… I can’t wait to see what is coming next! My only complaint with both is what I started my review with. They are too short! My advice… read them back to back like I just did.
