In Betwixt and Between, Ian and Zeke fought a battle against the queen of the dark realm in order to be together. Now, just when they think they might settle into as normal a life as elves living among humans might be able to expect, a new enemy threatens to tear them apart. While Zeke helps the shaman Alistair in his hunt for an elusive mermaid, Ian is called to confront a wicked nymph preying on tourists along Seattle’s waterfront. Zeke and Ian soon discover that the defeated Queen Ysolde has spread her evil into the sea realms, and danger lurks beneath every wave. But it’s too late to stop an escalating series of confrontations that lead to disappearances, death and the possible end of light in this world.
As Ysolde plots revenge and a mysterious prince seeks to win Ian for himself, the ancient war between light and dark sweeps Ian and Zeke into its maelstrom of hate, testing their trust for each other to the utmost.

A Night in the Life of Ian Evers
It’s not easy being an elf hidden among humans. It’s not easy being a light elf living with a dark elf. It’s not easy holding down a job when the evil queen of the dark realm is trying to murder you.
Welcome to my life. I’m Ian Evers; reporter, human, elf.
I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining. Much. Being half-elf is tremendous. Awesome. Weird but in a good way. My mother raised me as human to protect me from the svarta, the dark elves, so I’m still getting the hang of this whole magic thing. Luckily I have Zeke to help me.
Zeke is a svarta and he is….dark, dreamy, powerful…sorry, I can’t really think about Zeke without getting distracted. I know, I know. I said the svarta were out to murder my ass but Zeke is different. He did try to murder me, in the beginning, but it turns out we’re soul mates, or just really smoking hot for each other. We’re bonded now, and he’s trying to teach me about the ins and outs of elfdom. Subtlety isn’t his thing, and he’s pretty domineering, so we argue and get distracted a lot, but the magic business is coming along. I haven’t made anything explode in weeks.
So a day in the life of Ian Evers is like never a day. Zeke is nocturnal and “a good night’s sleep” is basically a thing of the past for me. And I have this job where I pretty much set my own hours, so no structure there either. I’m a reporter for The Cosmic Eye, a tabloid paper in Seattle. I work for the Eye because they let me chase after fairies and shit. You see, before I found out I was one, I was determined to prove the existence of magical creatures. Now my mission is to raise awareness and acceptance of these beings in the human realm. Not much luck so far in that department, but I’m sure there will come a day when we can all live in harmony and not fall into the whole “chasing the monster with pitchforks” mentality.
I spend a lot of time (at night) in sketchy places with my camera and my best human friend, Dijeree, who has some pixie blood in her but really is a kickass human chick with bright purple hair. Together we track the activities of the magicals who live hidden among the humans. My life would be pretty awesomely great right now if it wasn’t for all the dark elves who want to kill me, and the light elves who think I’m a bad person for living with a svarta. Specifically there’s this evil ex-queen named Ysolde who is so pissed off at me and Zeke because we helped put the ex in front of the queen. I have to watch out for tricks and traps around every corner. Zeke is so paranoid he’d like to keep me locked up all the time, which wouldn’t be totally bad, but, hey, I have a life beyond being his sex toy, right? Some elves are so old school… anyway…
What else can I tell you? I like rainy nights, hot chocolate, long walks on the beach except for when the sea nymphs are migrating and then you’re really better off staying home because migrating sea nymphs are like voracious and do not respect personal boundaries.
So there you have it; a night in the life of Ian Evers, intrepid reporter and elf. It’s mostly pretty fun, so give me a call if you want to hang out. I’ll try not to let any fairies hex you, unless you’re into that.
“Someone has to restore the balance between light and dark energy. I’m one of the last of my kind. I might be the only one who can do it.” Ian slid his hands off the table and rested them on his thighs. He expected derisive laughter from Zeke or a gentle clucking accompanied by a sad shake of the head. Sure, Ian Evers, nobody reporter for a gossip rag, half-breed elf, was going to save the world and fix what Ysolde spent centuries destroying.
Zeke’s face remained impassive, but a storm brewed in his eyes. “You’re not the last of the liosa. Others escaped.”
“I might as well be. They’re all gone, run off to hide out beyond…” Ian waved a hand in the air, signifying that remote world he sometimes glimpsed when they made love.
Glaring out the windows into their backyard, Zeke breathed deeply but said nothing. Ian continued.
“If I start with some miniscule adjustments, push back against the places the dark realm has encroached on this world, maybe some liosa will come out of hiding.”
“They won’t like you being with a svarta,” Zeke said.
“That’s their problem. I know I might never be buddies with other liosa, but we could use their help, right? If Ysolde is plotting to retake her throne like you say, and the svarta are behind her—”
“Only some of them. We don’t need anyone’s help.”
“Yes, we do. We never would’ve defeated Ysolde without Alistair’s and Cleona’s help.”
Zeke leaned forward, his gaze now focused intently on Ian. “We’re stronger now. We need to concentrate on solidifying our connection and making sure no one can break it.”
“You think someone could?” Ian asked. Surprised by the fear he saw lurking behind his lover’s composure, he instinctively put his hands on the table and reached for Zeke’s. Zeke allowed his hands to be held without reacting.
“You couldn’t track me in the dark realm,” Zeke said. “I’m afraid the same would be true if you ever go off into the realm of light. I’ll lose you.”
