REVIEW:
Down on the Farm is the first book in the Ames Bridge series and luckily both of the next books are coming later this year. We are introduced to the small-town community of Ames Bridge, which is famous for its beautiful covered bridge, and get to know the story of two young men who once were friends as kids then became sort of enemies as teenagers. We get to know what happens when they meet and spend a few months together as neighbors in their late twenties. This is a good, entertaining story, with the classic from enemies-to-lovers troupe.
Cal is running his family’s farm in Ames Bridge, providing farm trips to tourists and groups. Although he is known to be gay in the whole community he doesn’t have a love life as he wants to stay away from gossip and the predictable repercussions of the bigoted, narrow minded population of the town. This keeps him in a constant state of worry and fear. When Ben comes to take care of his late grandmother’s house (who was Cal’s neighbor) everything changes. For both of them.
These two share some seriously explosive chemistry and also a deep attraction with long buried emotions that go back to their teenage years. They both feel that they belong together, but their circumstances and ingrained fears make the road to happiness rocky. It was frustrating for me that they didn’t talk about their feelings. They were both struggling with their emotions and contemplating what is going to happen, what would happen if, but why didn’t they just have an honest conversation? It went on too long for me and honestly was a bit annoying to read it over and over again. They clearly belonged together. When they finally did talk I could have kissed Cal for doing the right thing. Up until the next chapter when he messed it up all over again. Of course, you need all that excitement and heartache in a romance and in the end all the conflicts and miscommunication got cleared up nicely. The writing is solid, the plot-line has a good pace and beside my problem mentioned before the conflicts are valid and well structured. There is plenty of well written, hot sexy-time but they don’t overpower the story. Cal and Ben are truly great together and I hope we get to see more of them in the upcoming books. I can’t wait to read more.
