Writing this Novel/Getting Ideas

Every now and then I sit down and purposefully try to think up ideas for novels. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t. Most of my general premises come from my daily life, though. I see or hear something, and the idea clicks in my brain. I dream individual scenes sometimes, which is fun, because they I get to craft a whole novel around that one scene. Actually, one night, as I was writing The Other Five Percent, I dreamed a scene I’d already written, but in my dream, I’d forgotten to have Ellis take his glasses off for something important. When I woke up and checked the actual manuscript, sure enough, I’d forgotten! I guess Dream Me was trying to warn me. Inspiration strikes when it wants to, and getting the idea for this novel was a total surprise.

I conceived of TOFP shortly before I came up with an idea for another book, and to be perfectly honest, I was way more excited about the second one. I was concerned that a book about a man discovering he’s bisexual through his feelings for another man was too . . . bland. It’d been done before, you know? The bisexuality aspect added a new twist to an old will-they-won’t-they premise, but I didn’t think I was necessarily breaking ground.

I was wrong. By the time I finished writing The Other Five Percent, I was convinced I had something special on my hands. I’m glad I wrote it while the idea was fresh!

From almost the moment I started working on it, my excitement for it grew and grew. The story had a mind of its own. Logan is so relatable, and Ellis’s struggles hit close to home. Their romance came alive to me, as did the subject matter, the humor, and, of course, the steamy parts. This story had a life and mind of its own, and it wooed me just as I’m sure it’ll woo you!

Thanks so much for reading, and remember to leave a comment for your chance to win!

About The Other Five Percent

Logan Vanderveer has a joke he’s been telling since college: he’s ninety-five percent straight. He did some experimenting in school, but none of the men he fooled around with inspired him to abandon “the plan”: meet a nice girl, get married, and settle down, just like his parents always said.

None of them except Ellis Floyd, who aroused desires and feelings that scared Logan. So much so that he abandoned their burgeoning relationship just as it might have become something. But four years later, Ellis is back, and Logan finds himself questioning his sexuality in a big way.

Ellis doesn’t fit into Logan’s plan. He’s happy being a starving artist, whereas Logan has sold his soul to corporate America. Ellis is ripped jeans, and Logan is tailored suits. And, most notably, Ellis is out. But seeing him again is dredging up memories—like how it feels to kiss Ellis, and that time they almost went all the way. With chemistry like theirs, Logan isn’t sure he can—or should—keep ignoring the other five percent.
