REVIEW:
Volume 1 of the Kingdom series combines three previously published books – the first three books of a series I hadn’t previously read and introduces us to a hardy and varied group of paranormal beings who are fighting for equality and the ability to live peacefully. The three books combined work as an overall story arc as RJ builds up the world she introduces us to and we meet the group who will fight, as peacefully as possible, for their freedoms. Although each story concentrates on a new couple they all fit together like a jigsaw and are vital to each other if they are to reach their common goal.
The first couple we meet are Micah and Connor. Micah is a vampire and has been accused of murdering his twin brother’s lover Ethan. Connor is a werewolf and a retriever and it is down to him to return with Micah so that he may be tried, albeit it unfairly. I really liked Micah and he remained one of my favourites throughout both the books. Connor finds himself fighting his wolf as the pesky thing recognises his true mate and becomes territorial. From the very first chapter the story layers begin to weave together and not everything is as it seems.
The next couple we meet are Declan and Levi. Picking up the storyline immediately Declan is another werewolf retriever who has been sent out to find Connor and aid him in bringing Micah in. Convinced his friend must either be dead or being held captive he doesn’t know what to do when faced with the truth. Levi is a council incubus sent with Declan to observe and help if necessary. More world building, more dilemmas and another set of fated mates.
Lastly in this volume we are introduced to Joseph and Phin. Joseph is pivotal to the story – as Micah’s twin and half of the pair that history says will save the paranormal world and bring peace. Both Phin and Joseph carry magic which proves to be useful in their fight against evil but both have also grown up believing two magical beings can’t be together – so where does that leave our latest fated couple?
Book 1 leaves us right in the middle of things and I’m sure Book 2 will bring more dilemmas, more fated couples and hopefully a resolution and some peace.
