Truth and lies.
Captain Jamie Callahan knows the Metahuman Defense Force frowns on fraternization. For once in his life, he’s breaking all the rules. Having Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan on his team and in his bed is worth the risk of being found out. When a mission comes down requiring Alpha Team to go undercover in order to infiltrate a criminal alliance, Jamie knows it won’t be easy. Putting his family’s name on the line is nothing compared to the role the MDF wants him to play—that of a billionaire’s son, discharged from the military, with a lover on his arm, looking to make his own shady business deals.
Dirty little secret.
Kyle knows the only way to be with Jamie is to hide their relationship from their superiors. Waking up to Jamie at home is more important than being together in public, or so Kyle thought, until he comes face to face with what he’s been missing. Pretending to be a couple on paper for the sake of the mission thrusts Kyle into a world of incredible wealth and a social status he’s not sure he belongs in, but he’ll do anything to stay by Jamie’s side.
Play the game to win.
Surrounded by the enemy, Jamie and Kyle need to trust each other now more than ever. Their covers—and the life they’re trying to build together—depend on it.
In the Ruins is a 105k word steamy gay sci-fi military romance with a HFN ending that skirts HEA. There is military violence within the story that may not be suitable for everyone, as well as explicit intimate scenes not suitable for readers under the age of 18. This is a sequel to In the Wreckage and reading the first book in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.
REVIEW:
Books like these and character like Jamie and Kyle are the reasons the one night stand to relationship trope’s are some of the absolute best. I love everything about storylines where the characters swear up and down about not wanting a relationship and one night turning into way more. At the end of Book 1 In the Wreckage (review here) we get a tiny taste of the emotions that were coming to life in Jamie and Kyle and they were exquisite just that small taste. Book 2, In the Ruins, explores those emotions a lot more fully plus gives Jamie and Kyle a huge taste of what life could be like for them as an open, out couple. I think I really enjoy these books because the danger, mystery, military element is always present. You really just never know what is going to happen but what you do know is that the MDF are badass and each story I’m getting sucked more and more in. Huge fan of this author…her writing is always so in depth with tons of information given. I’ll admit this book lost me a few times with the immense detail but the author always pulls it back to the team dynamic, the machinations around them, and the danger that always seems to be lurking in the shadows.
Book 2 has the MDF team submerged in a deep cover operation trying to week out a known danger that may have compromised past missions. Jamie and Kyle find themselves “playing” at being lovers and neither man realizes just how much they need to be lovers in the open until this current mission. Jamie and Kyle are still burning up the pages just like they did in book 1. These men have not lost a bit of their heat and it is just so damn good.
Like Book 1, this book centers around a mission to stop something detrimental from happening to the world and to stop very bad men from doing very bad things so I don’t want to take too much away from the suspense of the story by giving too much away.
All the awesome characters with their X-men like powers are at the forefront of the danger and it blows my mind that the author can make them all just as important as Kyle and Jamie.
Anyone invested in this unbelievable world, Jamie and Kyle and this author’s story needs to add this book to their pile. And if you haven’t read book 1 get it…you won’t be disappointed.
Recommend.
