The following excerpt involves a clashing of Zack’s work and home life when his work partner shows up at his place.
Duke and I spent ten hours a day for three weeks talking to dozens of people, and every lead went nowhere. That was the bad news; the good news was that Duke and I were actually getting along. We talked about our personal lives, which meant lying about my relationship with Phil. I told Duke he was a high school buddy who’d happened to need a roommate when I returned from being undercover.
On a Friday night, Phil and I were looking forward to a quiet evening reading and making love. We were going to hit an outdoor market the following day, buy fresh vegetables, fruits, and maybe even honey and some flowers, then make dinner for friends.
We were in the living room in nothing but our boxers when the doorbell rang.
“You expecting anyone?” I asked.
Phil shook his head without setting his book down. I got up and just about screamed when I looked through the peephole and saw Duke. I dashed back to the living room and yanked the book from Phil’s hands.
“What the hell, Zack? You lost my place.”
“It’s Duke,” I whispered. “My partner.”
“Oh, hell.”
We scrambled to the bedroom and quickly pulled on sweats and T-shirts.
“Should I answer the door with you?” Phil asked.
“No! That’ll look suspicious. Just go sit in the recliner with your book.”
He nodded and ran off while I jogged to the door just as Duke rang the doorbell again. I inhaled and opened the door.
“You are here,” he said. “I was about to give up.”
“Sorry. I was in my bedroom and my roommate is reading. He gets so sucked in, a twister could come through and he wouldn’t notice.”
Duke cocked an eyebrow. “Am I interrupting anything?”
“Oh, no, of course not. Come in.” He followed me to the living room where Phil had done as instructed and did his best to act surprised that we had a guest. He got up and said, “Hi, I’m Phil Smalley.”
Duke introduced himself curtly and they shook hands. He viewed Phil for a second before turning to me. “Can we talk in private, Pomeroy?”
“Sure.” I led him through the kitchen and to the small dining room where we had a card table set up. “Do you want to sit? Can I get you a cup of coffee?”
He shook his head. “I’m sorry about bothering you. I just had a thought about that last lady we interviewed.”
“Sadie Craig?” She’d originally called insisting her former friend had to be D.B. Cooper. However, by the time we interviewed her, she’d changed her story.
“I’m sure she’s hiding something. I want to interview her again.”
“On Monday?” I asked hopefully.
He shook his head. “I’d like to surprise her tomorrow morning. That might spook her enough to be honest. I could do it by myself, but I figured it’d be better if it was both of us.”
There went my plans for the outdoor market and time with Phil. “Sure. I didn’t have any plans tomorrow morning. You think we’d be done by noon? I have a dinner party in the evening. Just a couple of friends.”
He pursed his lips. “Yeah, we should be done by then. I’ll write the report so you don’t have to worry about it.”
“Sounds like a good deal to me.”
After a solid handshake, Duke glanced at me and asked, “I gotta take a piss. You mind if I use your bathroom?”
“Of course not.” I led him back to the living room and pointed down the hallway. Second door on the right.”
I watched as he went past the bathroom, instead opening the third door-the extra bedroom.
“Oh, you did say the second door, didn’t you?” He blushed, found the right room and entered.
I dared to peer at Phil, who was staring at me, wide-eyed.
“What’s going on?” he mouthed.
I shrugged.
Duke was in the bathroom only a few minutes but it felt more like an hour. Him being in my personal space definitely made me nervous. Finally, he emerged, said he’d pick me up at nine a.m. and left.
I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I watched him pull out of my driveway.
“Sorry about the plans for tomorrow.” I dropped to my knees in front of Phil and lay my head in his lap.
“Don’t worry, I understand.” He massaged my scalp as he ran his fingers through my short hair. “That man is intimidating. He scared the hell out of me.”
“Welcome to my world.”

Romance on the Edge
Ethan Stone doesn’t write your typical boy meets boy stories. With a combination of love and suspense he makes his characters work hard for their HEAs. If they can survive what he puts them through, then they can survive anything. He enjoys Romance with an Edge.
Ethan has been reading mysteries and thrillers since he was young. He’s had a thing for guys in uniform for just as long. That may have influenced the stories he writes.
He’s a native Oregonian with two kids. One of whom has made him a grandfather three times over; even though he is way too young.
