BLURB:
Cowboy Danny Boone—a name he made up one drunken night and has regretted ever since—harbors a big past and yearns for a small future. A short, bright career as a champion bull rider almost ended in his death when his homophobic father discovered Danny was gay. Now Danny longs for a plot of land he can build a ranch on, enough money to make up for some of the education he missed… and, secretly, a beautiful femme who likes to top—a combo rarer than a unicorn.
Then onto the guest ranch where Danny works drives San Francisco decorator Laurie Belmont, a young man so gorgeous he makes the horses gasp, and so ballsy he almost kills Danny’s attacker. Laurie’s trying to find his way out from under the thumb of a domineering mother, helpless father, and rich, privileged boyfriend. But no matter the attraction, their lives are worlds apart, and cowboys don’t ride unicorns.
REVIEW:
Having read and highly enjoying book 1 in the Cowboys Don’t series, I was super excited to get my hands on Cowboys Don’t Ride Unicorns, the next book in the series. Let me tell you, Cowboys Don’t Come Out was awesome, for sure. But this book? It absolutely blew me away. This is going on my top reads of 2017 list, for sure.
Danny Boone is quite content to live and work at a ranch on the outskirts of Chico, California. Tight-lipped about his past to everyone around him, the only thing he will say is that he has a bit of experience bull-riding, and occasionally participates in the sport if an event is held relatively close to the ranch. Noone needs to know just how much experience he really has at bull-riding, like the fact that he was quite the champion once upon a time. But, that was long ago, and in the very distant past. Now, Danny modestly dreams of having his own plot of land where he can build a home, have enough money to go to school, and a man in his life. Not just any type of man will suit his tastes tho. He secretly yearns for a beautiful femme who is dominant enough in the bedroom to top him. Something he has resigned himself to never having, because that combination is extremely rare.
Queue Laurie Belmont. Tall, rail thin, and stunningly beautiful, the very attached Laurie should be absolutely off limits but Danny can’t stop fantasizing about the man. With an extremely powerful and rich boyfriend, you would think Laurie has it all. But, that is where everyone is quite wrong. Laurie is so very trapped in a superficial life that he never wanted for himself. When, he goes on vacation with his boyfriend and sets eyes on the very handsome, uber butch Danny Boone, his life will never be the same. Laurie is everything Danny is not, but all the things he craves.
Cowboys Don’t Ride Unicorns got me in the feels so hard. It was so absolutely wonderful, I have already read it a second time! I thought it would be hard to top Rand and Kai as one of my favorite couples, but Danny and Laurie definitely did. If I could give Tara Lain 25 <3’s for this review, I would. Take my word for it that this book is a definite must read, and you are certainly missing out big time if you do not get it. ASAP! Tara, I curse you for making me cry. Yet again. But, I love you dearly for giving us the gift that is Danny and Laurie’s story. Brilliant, my dear. So very brilliant.
