Morgan Drake witnesses a murder in an alleyway. He is the only person who can give evidence in prosecuting the cop responsible for the crime. When the FBI safe house where he’s being held is compromised, he follows the instructions of the agent in charge and runs.
Nik Valentinov works for Sanctuary, a foundation that offers witness protection when FBI security is questionable.
When Morgan’s handler sends him to Nik for safety, neither Morgan nor Nik could imagine that two weeks alone in a cabin in the woods would have their hearts racing with something much more than merely trying to keep Morgan alive.
Love.
REVIEW:
There’s just something really sexy about a man determined to do everything possible to keep you safe. At the start of the book, we meet Morgan, a guy whose life took a dive when he witnessed something he shouldn’t have and even after put into protective custody he just can’t seem to get a break. Now running for his life, Morgan’s forced to put his safety in the hands of a complete stranger on the word of a man he barely knows. Enter Nik who comes in as a favor to his old partner Taylor, one of the men that had been part of the protection detail assigned to Morgan. Nik is fairly gung ho about his job and is determined to keep things professional but, as time goes on, he lets himself open up to his charge even as he’s kicking himself for doing so. When things go pear shaped, Nik blames himself and retreats as far as possible away from the man he’s come to love, convinced its for the best…too bad Morgan doesn’t feel the same and will do whatever he needs to in order to get Nik back.
I really wish this one had been longer as I enjoyed these two characters together quite a lot. (I mean, it’s a decent sized book, but I’m greedy. Lol) Both men had their hang-ups but worked really well together. What surprised me, and was much more enjoyable as a result, was that Morgan was the aggressor in regards to his relationship with Nik; I understand that Nik wouldn’t have made a move because he was so determined to stay professional but I honestly didn’t think Morgan had it in him…until he did. Lol Even with as quickly as things progressed between them, I liked Morgan and Nik together and could see them making a go at something permanent. What I wanted, but didn’t get, was actually more overall action in the book. This was primarily a book about keeping Morgan safe, and while I enjoyed the time he spent with Nik, I found the action I got only whetted my appetite for more.
I found this to be an overall easy read and a strong start to the series; there was a great foundation laid down towards the rest of the series and I look forward to reading the next book. If you enjoy books with law enforcement or men working security detail, you may want to give this one a look.
