KISSING
“With a kiss let us set out for an unknown world.”
—– Alfred de Musset
You’ve read a hundred or more romances that all end in a HEA. Yet that first kiss is always the moment your heart is waiting on.
Skylar, here. Contemplating first kisses in my books. While writing sex scenes can be tricky and the fear of being too redundant or too clinical looms, none of those worries factor in when I compose a kissing scene.
There are several different types of kisses in romances. Here are my top five types of kissing scenes!
The First Kiss
Since it is a key moment in any romance, I love that soft brush of lips and the hint of more sweetness to come that is offered with a first kiss. You are unsure. Hopeful. He leans forward….
Excerpt from The Only Guy:
“I don’t know.” Aaron searched his eyes. Such a beautiful color. He’d always thought so. He reached out his hand without meaning to and cupped the side of Jesse’s face. The beard wasn’t so bad; it was softer than it looked.
…
Aaron leaned in and brought his lips to Jesse’s. He only intended a friendly kiss, or at least that was what he told himself, but Jesse’s lips quivered under Aaron’s, and his lips parted. Their tongues touched, sweet and warm and electric.
Excerpt from Close to You:
Marc whispered, “Tell me to stop and I will.”
Tomas parted his lips, but no words came out. He shook his head.
Marc teased the seam of Tomas’s lips and begged for entry. Tomas went rigid for a second, but then his lips softened against Marc’s and his mouth opened…For the first time in his life, Marc felt all his tension, coiled inside him, let go. He offered all he had in that kiss as their tongues touched. The parts of himself he had never shown to anybody, the parts he had never even shown to himself.
The “I Don’t Care About the Risk” Kiss
You are simply tired of how hard life is by this point. It is hard to be a parent, or a doctor in the emergency room, or a teacher with struggling students (you can fill in any tough life situation here). You want some fun. You want a release. You deserve it, damn it!
*Note this might be the first kiss, but it could be a later kiss
Where the MC simply goes for the temptation
Excerpt from Lovers, Losers, and You:
Soaring on a high of emotion, Owen captured Andrew’s mouth once more. He threw himself into the kiss this time, their tongues sliding together. Andrew made a half-groaning sound as the kiss became hot and heavy.
The Kiss before Fighting
He is making you angry. You don’t want to fight. Instead, you press your lips on his and hope it is enough. The kiss is desperate and raw. The fight will come regardless.
Excerpt from Exposed:
“Always in a rush, aren’t you?” Daniel chided. He pushed at him to be still. “Tonight will be about a little patience. You could use a lesson.”
“Arrogant prick,” Rafe groaned as Daniel nipped at his lips.
Daniel kissed Rafe’s mouth and then licked his way down his throat. He ran his fingers lightly across Rafe’s shoulders and chest
…
Daniel kissed him, swallowing his low moans. Their lips pressed together messily, tongues thrusting, teeth clanking. When Daniel pulled back, Rafe’s breath came in short, rapid gasps.
The Apology Kiss
The fight is long over, but the hurt between you lingers in the air. He’s sorry. You’re sorry. Somebody has to make the first move.
Excerpt from The Last Guy Breathing:
“I’m sorry,” they said at the same time.
“You are?” Henry asked.
“Yeah, I shouldn’t have let you walk away.”
…
Locke held his face a second and simply looked at him. Henry stared back, taking in every detail. Locke’s beautiful blue eyes, his skin, the ridge of his nose, his soft lips, the shape of his firm jaw. Mine.
He leaned in and kissed Locke, promising his own “now and always.”
The Comfort Kiss
You can count on this kiss. It’s that warm blanket, that cup of cocoa—he makes you feel that safe.
Or maybe it’s even more? Maybe you need it. You can’t find comfort anyplace else. There is only hurt outside of the kiss.
Excerpt from Here for You:
“Ian.” Cole grabbed the edge of Ian’s shirttail. “This is the…the worst…fucking… hateful day. And I—I don’t know where else to go.”
Cole leaned forward. He kissed Ian passionately, fiercely, his lips searing across Ian’s.
…
His hands pushed underneath Ian’s shirt, and he laid his palms at Ian’s chest, right over his heart. Cole breathed all of him in, tasted his mouth, and caressed his warm skin. Cole closed his eyes.
He couldn’t bear it if Ian turned him out, even if he deserved it.
But Ian pulled him closer.
I confess: I love all types of kisses. The sounds and sensations that the character experiences is so much fun to write.

SECRETS OF YOU:
It’s never easy to find redemption.
Carrying scars and regrets, River Darcourt avoids too much intimate contact. Among his friends, he is known as a quiet loner. Forget about love—it’s not something he will consider—until sweet, young, and tempting Morgan Hayes becomes his housemate. River closed his heart long ago, but the attraction is impossible to deny.
Morgan Hayes needs a change. He is moving out of his critical father’s home and in with his friends, including his secret/not-so-secret crush, River. Having feelings for River is a terrible idea. But what is a guy to do when the annoyingly sexy mechanic is just across the hall?
While Morgan has overcome ugliness and is ready for love, he’s just not sure River ever will be. They have both experienced pain in their lives. So Morgan dares River to take a chance, and love will either break their fractured hearts in more pieces or, just possibly, make them whole again.

I love the first kiss!!
The “I Don’t Care About the Risk” Kiss… because you can walk away from the first kiss, you can fail to make an apology kiss, the comfort kiss may not be enough and the kiss before fighting may lead to even greater violence and pain. The “I Don’t Care About the Risk” Kiss since it places the relationship on a whole new level. One that you aren’t willing to walk away from even though your life may be more difficult because of it.
Congratulations on the new release Skylar.
I love all kisses. All depending on the moment in the book. The first kiss though that is something special. The anticipation and excitement and nerves. I can feel it in my bones.
All kisses are great, but I tend to like the “Wait a second, I just realized I love you!” kiss…
Congratulations on your new book! I always look forward to the first kiss.
The unexpected kisses <3
All kisses are good, but I love angry kisses, where frustration and desires are strong!
All kisses are good but I like the ones that are a surprise.
I like the kiss that happens when one party thinks they misunderstood or is jumping to conclusions and only a kiss can shut them up so said misunderstandings can be fixed.
I love all kisses, however my favorite is the first kiss because it’s so magical sometimes.
