REVIEW BY CINNAMON
Nachos and Hash is the first novella in Brandon Witt’s new series. The stories have a solid connection with a wonderful place, Hamburger Mary’s which is a real life restaurant chain and the gayest, most amazing establishment imaginable.
Brandon Witt gifts us with his solid writing, and creates a wonderful fictional world the way he usually does. We get to meet a set of amazing characters, a bunch of people who form a unique, loving family. No matter if you are gay or straight or bi or whatever label you wanna use, if you have a heart you will want to be part of this group, you will want to experience their life on a daily basis. Diversity, friendship, acceptance and love are key elements in all the stories, and I’m sure everyone will find a few new favorite characters in them.
In the first installment we meet Darwin and Cody. Darwin is on one of his mission dates (looking for a serious partner in a steady relationship) in Mary’s when he meets Cody who is working there as a server. Their relationship starts out pretty awkward but their instant mutual attraction leads to further meetings and a first then a second date. Their communication is getting better and better. I didn’t feel their connection in the first half of the book, but as the awkwardness and insecurities subsided I could finally feel that these two really belong together.
The ride they get is not an easy one. Some events were really unexpected and I was a bit shocked and surprised to where the writer was taking us, but all through the angst and excitement we came out stronger and got a fulfilling, satisfying ending.
I really enjoyed the secondary characters, especially ManDonna and Vahin, and I can’t wait to read what the writer comes up with in the stories to follow.
REVIEW by Danielle
When I found out that Brandon Witt was going to write a series of contemporary novella’s I was like “Yes! Mine!”
I was excited to see what he could do with a shorter version of a book and I love a good series 🙂
We meet the people of Mary’s Burger, or better yet the family and friends of Mary’s, and I have to say they already found a place in my heart. I cannot wait to read more of them.
I like the way Mr Witt introduces us to the main characters of Mary’s in their own way and this first story centres on Cody, a new arrival to the staff, and Darwin who drops in on a date and ends up hanging out and staying.
While each have totally different expectations of life, they both feel a connection that is not to be denied and I have to say I liked how their story evolved. It did take me a bit to have me feeling their connection as a reader, however.
There were some things that made me feel like I was left with questions and some parts felt a bit rushed. Perhaps because it was all put in a novella. I really would have liked some more time in between or even in the scenes. It could be because it is a first part but that still leaves me willing to read the next book right away.
The story centres on the family that is Mary’s and the friendship and closeness between them all and I really loved that.
I do hope that the following books will also bring the characters from the previous books along as well. I am really hoping to read a bit more of Cody and Darwin in the next one.
Overall I really liked the start of this new series and as I mentioned would like to read more.
And I want to go to Denver and eat there 😉
