Playing around one night, jokingly building a Wiccan altar in the dead of winter, Jacob accidentally summons the Spirit of Fire. If he doesn’t, his terrifying visions of flames will become horrifyingly real.
REVIEW:
While I really love the sci-fi stories produced by this author, it was really nice seeing something different. I really enjoyed the wiccan elements present in the story in that they were incorporated very well yet didn’t take over the story itself. Though short, the author managed to make this book feel complete, which was also appreciated, and I enjoyed where things were left between the main characters.
You get a really good feeling for Jacob over the course of the story, as its all from his point of view, and I like how you got to see him go through various stages of panic, denial and then acceptance about what he needs to do. The other main character you don’t get to know as well though I found his inclusion in the story a welcome surprise. The ending itself was both as I expected and a complete surprise (in a good way) but as it was one of the best things about the book I don’t want to ruin it.
If you’ve enjoyed this author before or are looking for a short story with a bit of magic and a happy ending, I’d give this one a try. I really enjoyed it. 🙂
