Rand McIntyre settles for good enough. He loves his small California ranch, raising horses, and teaching riding to the kids he adores—but having kids of his own and someone to love means coming out, and that would jeopardize everything he’s built. Then, despite his terror of flying, he goes on a holiday to Hana, Hawaii, with his parents and meets the dark and mysterious Kai Kealoha, a genuine Hawaiian cowboy. Rand takes to Kai’s kid brother and sister as much as he drools over Kai, but the guy sports more prickles than a horned toad and more secrets than the exotic land he comes from.
Kai’s earned his privacy and lives to protect his “kids.” He ought to stay away from the big, handsome cowboy for everyone’s sake—but since the guy’s just a haole on a short vacation, how much damage can he do? When all of Kai’s worst fears and Rand’s darkest nightmares come true at once, there’s not much chance for two cowboys who can’t—or won’t—come out.
REVIEW:
Okay, so reading books about sexy cowboys is one of my guilty pleasures. Plus, I am a huge fan of Tara Lain. So, when I heard that Tara had written a book about sexy cowboys, I freaked and jumped at the chance to get my hands on a copy. Let me tell you, that woman is one talented author. This book was excellent!
Rand McIntyre learned long ago that being gay and a cowboy is not good at all. In fact, it can get you killed, or at least severely beaten. Now an adult, Rand is a closeted California ranch owner who loves teaching children to ride horses. He really does enjoy his life, but there’s something missing; something he doesn’t think he’ll ever have. Love.
After a harrowing flight to Hawaii (okay, only harrowing to him since he’s afraid of heights and flying), to celebrate the Christmas holiday with his parents, Rand meets Kai while out dancing one night. Mmm… Kai. A paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) who works for the hotel that Rand is staying in, Kai Kealoha is basically Rand’s wet dreams come to life. And, when Rand meets Kai’s brother and sister, they get along like peanut butter and jelly.
The problem is that Kai has his own secrets (including being gay, of course. Because, y’know, cowboys don’t come out), and they get even harder to keep the closer he and his siblings get to Rand. What are these secrets Kai is trying so desperately to keep from coming out? -pun intended. *wiggles eyebrows* What happens when Rand’s vacation is over and he has to go back to California? Is there any hope of a future between Kai and Rand? Oh, please do get this book and find out. I swear you’ll love it!
Honestly, words cannot begin to describe how much I loved this book. It was so easy to get emotionally invested in Kai and Rand’s relationship both with themselves and Kai’s siblings. I cried at least twice. What is it with books and making me cry lately? This is the third one in a row! Well, okay Tara Lain always makes me cry at least twice in every one of her books. But, I think of it as a sign that the author has done something very right to get me to react like this.
Anyhoo… Tara Lain, you are one crazy talented author. I encourage everyone to take a chance on Cowboys Don’t Come Out, because it is absolutely wonderful. Well done, Tara.
