One snowy evening, a car wreck in front of his toy store triggers terrible memories for Jake. Suddenly, he is in the midst of another winter storm—and another accident, one that not everyone walked away from. When he returns to the present, Jake is on the ground, being watched over by a guardian angel in the form of a kind man named Eli. Eli is no stranger to panic attacks and PTSD, and he’s happy to help Jake get home—where the weather forces him to remain for the night. For Jake, it could be the first step toward a life free from fear and loneliness.

A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Advent Calendar “Bah Humbug.”

Review:

This little story made me smile a lot. Jake is a man who lost his whole family and is just trying to keep going and get through life. Panic attacks and being lonely make it hard. Until Eli rescues him.

I liked this story a lot. There’s some angst but nothing that takes away from the lovely holiday feeling that this whole collection has.

It’s simple, just two men working through Jake’s normal feelings of insecurity and fear and working their way toward a brighter future for them both. It happens fast, but for once it’s doesn’t feel rushed. It’s simply time for Jake to move forward in his life and when he meets Eli, he’s found the perfect person to do that with.

Like this review, it’s very short but completely satisfying. The only other character of note is Jenny, Jake’s employee and best friend who forcefully and lovingly encourages Jake in his journey.

If you’re looking for something short, sweet and that will make you smile, this is definitely the story for you.
