BLURB:
For Sean Wright, driving a cab in the tiny Navy town of Anchor Point isn’t an exciting job . . . until he picks up just-dumped Paul Richards. A drive turns into a walk on the pier, which turns into the hottest hookup Sean’s had in ages.
After a long overdue breakup, Paul can’t believe his luck. Of all the drivers, he’s picked up by the gorgeous, gay, and very willing Sean. Younger guys aren’t usually his thing, but Paul can’t resist.
One taste and neither man can get enough . . . right up until they realize that Paul is Sean’s father’s commanding officer and the last man Sean should be involved with.
With two careers on the line, their only option is to back off. It’s not easy, though; the sex and the emotional connection are exactly what both men have been craving for a long time. But Paul has devoted twenty-four years to his career and his dream of making admiral. If he’s caught with Sean, that’s all over. He has to choose—stay the course, or trade it all for the man who drove off with his heart.
REVIEW:
The breakup may have been in the making for a while, but that doesn’t make it any more enjoyable. So when Paul Richards leaves the hotel he was planning to spend the weekend in with his, now, ex-boyfriend, he really isn’t in the mood to go anywhere or do anything. He just really doesn’t wanna be there any longer. Which is why he gets in the closest taxi and tells the driver to just drive.
Sean Wright, taxi driver by night, college student by day, is used to the odd request from people he picks up in his cab. Still, being told to just drive aimlessly around town while the guy in the backseat broods. is a bit new. But after talking to the guy for a bit, Sean kinda likes the guy. Lack of direction nonetheless.
What they have is supposed to be nothing but a quick fling. They are practically strangers, at very different points in their lives, and Paul is Sean’s father’s age–this all means that anything more would be crazy. Too bad the crazy seems to be catching.
I’ve read quite a few of L.A. Witt’s backlog and I have to say that her military books are some of my favorites. I love the sense of reality that she brings to them, and because of that I have no problem simply sinking into the stories and letting the characters have their way with me. Just Drive did just that.
One of my favorite parts of this book was how the age differences were handled. I have a big thing for large age-gaps, and when they are done right I’m all over them like catnip. The way the characters reacted to each other felt true to who they were, both when they were together and when they were apart.
The push and pull between the characters was magnetic. They couldn’t seem to keep away from each other–even when it became clear how bad an idea their love affair was–but at the same time they did try to do the right thing. They were just really bad at it. I think in other circumstances this whole “yes I want, no I can’t” thing would have bugged me, but hot damn, it just worked here. It was a bit messy and dangerous (if only in a professional sense) but it was genuine and you could really tell that they care for each other.
I had a hard time putting this book down. And I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book in this series. If you love Witt’s military men as much as me you are going to love this.
