Lady Cory has carved out a life for herself not just as a wife to three husbands but also as one of the rulers of the supernatural communities of Northern California—and a college student in search of that elusive degree. When a supernatural threat comes crashing into the hard-forged peace of Green’s Hill, she and Green determine that they’re the ones in charge of stopping the abomination that created it. To protect the people they love, Cory, Bracken, and Nicky travel to Redding to confront a tight-knit family of vampires guarding a terrible secret. It also leads them to a conflict of loyalties, as Nicky’s parents threaten to tear Nicky away from the family he’s come to love more than his own life.
Cory has to work hard to hold on to her temper and her life as she tries to prove that she and Green are not only leaders who will bind people to their hearts, but also protectors who will keep danger from running rampant.

REVIEW:
This series is getting hard to review because there is just so much going on! We are SEVEN books in now, since three were split in to two volumes each. That’s a lot of books, a lot of action, a lot of characters, and a lot of plot. At this point I’m hoping if you are looking at this review, that you are familiar with these books. If you aren’t, check out my review of Vulnerable, the first book in the series.
Cory and crew are still at the cabins outside of Redding, trying to deal with the vampire making baby vampires, one of which is living in the vault at Green’s Hill. Nicky’s parents and the nasty-ass woman they brought to try and tempt Nicky away from Cory are still at the cabins. Green is still at the hill, trying to deal with the man blackmailing them. There is still some something causing chaos for everyone….
I’m not going to go to much in to the details, there is too much happening. I’ll just say that through the careful use of persuasion, a bit of showmanship, magic, and a fair amount of killing, all of these story lines resolve. Cory is at the heart of all of them, except one. I was happy to see some of the other folks step up and deal with their own shit, instead of leaving Cory to do it yet again. Although all of the issues are resolved, I wouldn’t say it’s all resolved satisfactorily. There is drama and trauma, leaving several of our people in bad places mentally, but ultimately at the end of the book, all of our people are happy and safe. Plus there is something that starts at the end of the book that has me SO FREAKING EXCITED!
This book seems to have more sex in it, on page anyway, and we see a couple of same sex pairings. Cory and Bracken do a little spying on a couple of the male vampires, then in another scene, Bracken gets to be the filling in the middle of a sandwich! Cory is there too, so that scene isn’t strictly m/m, but it was so yummy… Plus we get the usual Cory and her various men scenes, which are always lovely and hot!
I particularly love the sense of community I get from these books. I spent a couple of years in a commune when I was a teenager, in California, and these books remind me of that feeling of community I had then. I liked that there was always someone to hang out with, or go to the park with. When Cory needs to hang out, she heads to the living room, and the chances are good someone is there. If one of the other characters needs a chat with Cory, she’s available to them. Especially in this book at the lake cabins, they all hang out like normal people. Eating junk food, playing games by the fire, swimming, boating, just being together. Or back at the hill watching movies, knitting, playing chess and eating pie. In among these dark story lines of good versus evil, the good guys sit around and argue about what kind of pie is best! And when they ARE out killing bad guys, they do it together.
This is the last of the main books to be revised, although there are a few short stories about a trio of werewolves due out later. Then we get THE NEW BOOK!!! How many years have we been waiting for the next one? I can’t even remember at this point, but it’s coming!
Love this series, love this author! Read these books!
